Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens: A Life in Pictures

Extraordinary!
Bouvier Beale wrote in his essay for this book:We hope this book will help see Edie differently and with a deeper appreciation of how she grew into the familiar character from the Grey Gardens documentary. We hope not to only restore her dignity, but also make known her sensitivity, passion, and genius that we, as her family, remember vividly. It was clear that Little Edie wanted her story to be shared.Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens: A Life In Pictures is beyond beyond as I like to say... and the quote above is perfect. Bravo!The layout and choice of photographs in the book are sumptuous and stunning. I loved the use of Edie's poetry, Bouvier Beale's essay, and the letters from Jackie also. The book truly does restore Edie's dignity, sensitivity, passion and genius - our goals for our books were the same.Looking through this book was an emotional experience for me - the same thing happened as I read through Edie's 100 or so cards and letters to me between 1976 - 2001 for my next book Letters of Little Edie Beale: Grey Gardens and Beyond her dignity, wit and intelligence shined through.Edie was so much more than the one dimensional "character" on screen in Grey Gardens and I do think that the public is realizing they saw only a fraction of many layers in the film.Congratulations to Eva Beale and everyone else involved with the book!Anyone who loves Grey Gardens and or Edie Beale must have it!I believe there are also autographed copies of this magnificent publication available on [...]Walter Newkirkauthor,memoraBEALEia: a private scrapbook about Edie Beale of Grey Gardens1st cousin to 1st lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Great Coffee Table Book
If you are like me and love Grey Gardens and The Beale's you will love this book! I ordered 1 for myself and 1 to gift! It came shrink wrapped and perfect! It is large in size and thick! Great cover photo of Little Edie! This is truly a great gift for the woman who has everything! You won't regret buying it!The downside is the price went up almost $9.00! That is terrible!

Extraordinary Picture Book of an Amazing Woman
A dedicated Grey Gardens fan, and of Little Edie especially, I cherish any extra bit of information on the Beales. For the past two years, I've scoured the internet for pictures of her, and saved them all in a special folder in my computer. I was afraid when I bought this book that it would contain the same photos that are so readily available on the web, but that couldn't be further from the truth.Starting from Big Edie's youth and working it's way onto the life of Little Edie, the 200+ page book contains never-before-seen, high quality, glossy photos of the Edie's we know and love - interspersed between some of Little Edie's letters and poetry. My only complaint is that two or three pages were wasted on pictures of Edie's brothers - I know they play important roles in Edie's life, but who cares what they looked like when they were 12? Unless they're in a picture with their mother or their sister, I definitely don't. Either way - this book is a necessity for a true Grey Gardens fan, and it leaves you hoping that the Beale estate will release a second volume.

this treasure trove really cements what their lives were like before The Great Depression hit
If you are a fan of the Maysles Brothers movies from The Criterion Collection, and also the HBO film starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, this is a must have.This book fills in all of the blanks of both Big Edie, and Little Edie using photographs from Their collection.If you feel as if you knew them before, this treasure trove really cements what their lives were like before The Great Depression hit, and it draws you that much closer to them.A remarkable testament to two lives that were inseparably intertwined. It will make you long to step back in time to those wonderful days gone by.

Grainy Photos
I love the variety of photos included in the book, but some of the pictures were blown up so large that they look distorted. Also, for the price of the book, you think that some of the photos would have been cleaned up a little. Some photos look like they were processed with a scratched or dirty negative and for aesthetics, could have been improved before publishing. Some of the captions also are either redundant and poorly edited, but let's be honest, it's really about the pictures! It would have been nice for some of the photos to not have been enlarged at all rather than filled a page with one large, grainy shot. Finally, most of the poetry isn't dated... it would be nice to know if it were written as a child or an adult.

Good book
The book is good, however, I was surprised at it being just pictures and not a full story. I probably did not read all the reviews well enough. Still interesting family history.

Poor Little and Big Edie;
I really enjoyed all the pages, the pictures; the writings of little Edie. The book gives one a sense of what might have been.A synopsis perhaps on many of our lives that are rich with stories but we don't have the famous name or connection formost people to notice. Everyone should really see the documentary of Grey Gardens and the recent film with DrewBarrymore who did a splendid job portraying little Edie.It's a Keeper.
