Love
I’ve only ever seen the movie adaptation, which I’ve enjoyed over the years and several viewings…but there is something to say about actually reading the work as intended by Alice Walker. There’s significance in how Celie uses names for men that doesn’t cross over with just viewing the movie. I also love how the gaze of this book is that of a black woman and how the patriarchy of black men effects us just as much as racism.I have so many thoughts, but if you’ve not read this book before, do yourself a favor and read it now! :)

I ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ this Book
I have seen this movie about 500 times. I grew up watching the movie every Sunday twice or three times a day. For years. I finally decided to read the book; knowing the book would be better. I just didn't know it would be this good. I'm so happy I finally read this story.

The Color Purple
I love the movie but as with any book made into a movie, it's so much better. You get information that helps to understand the movie better. I recommend this book. If you are not an adult I would incourage you consult a responsible adult and ask if it is suitable for you to read.

It's been a long time
I just happened across this as a suggested read, and I decided to read it for the second time in my life. I read it initially when I was in high school. I am so glad I revisited this book. This is a classic for sure. A look back to a time when being colored was not always pleasant. But for Celie and Nettie, their love for each other as sisters, was worth the hardships, even if they weren't able to see each other for so many years. It was amazing to watch Celie become the woman she was meant to be with help from her friend Shug. It is a heartwrenching story of resilience. Highly recommend!

It’s a GREAT READ
I didn’t have any expectations going into reading the book because I always heard the book was different from the movie. While there are similarities the book is more greatly detailed than the movie could have been and parts of the movie are completely made up and didn’t happen in the book I won’t give anything away if you haven’t read the book but it’s well worth the read.

worth the awards it received
While this book is hard to read literary wise, it’s beautifully written. It was nice to have a book truly represent the author and their ethnicity. It sheds a light on a subject I know little about and cannot fathom how one feels in the situation the storyline follows. It’s captivating, based on real world events and 100% worth the literary awards it has received over the years of its release. Everyone should have to read this book at some point in their life.

A novel of intersections
A fascinating exploration of life for a black, queer, woman sojourning through the American South in the interwar period. The book is framed a series of letters or journal entries written initially to God to expiate the emotional trauma of her life. The format allows us as readers a front row seat to our protagonist’s internal monologue as she works through racism, misogyny and poverty to find an uncompromising happiness in her identity. Full of humor, tragedy, love, and inspiration, this is a nuanced view of growth and healing.
