Very realistic portrayal of war
Chris Lynch does a great job of portraying the awful randomness of war and the insanity of combat. You never know when the danger you're constantly surrounded by will reach out and "touch" you. When it does, the outcomes sometimes defy description and don't even make logical sense. But that's what war is; completely random and completely senseless. Those who die suffer less than those who live because the living can't explain why they didn't die and others did. Sometimes guys deliberately put themselves in harms way, because they don't want to have to live with the guilt of not having died.

I havent read it yet so not sure if there's everything fine on the inside and 2
I rated it 4 stars because 1. I havent read it yet so not sure if there's everything fine on the inside and 2. The hard cover was different than expected. It was a hard book but with a paper cover and I was hoping that the art/ illustration would be on the book itself not a paper cover. But other than that, everything is fine and it shipped really quick! I would recommend.

Great book for the history buff
One of the students read the first three books in this series that were in our school library. He was delighted when I purchased 4 and 5 at his request. The unfortunate part is that he read them both in less than a week. Now we're on to WWII books.

Leaves you Guessing at some point
Though clearly written in simple language, the stories seem "cut off" before what one might think the ending should be. Having served in VN Dec 1967 - Dec 1968, I can finish the stories in my mind. The cold reader, that is, one who was never in war, might have a difficult time closing the "loops". Has its sad moments and very funny moments, at times a tragi-comedy.

Pretty good
Should have kept on going. It didn't end well. It felt like it was incomplete. He should have said Rudi died. And kept on going.

I bought this for my grandson (age 14). He had found 3 & 5 at a book fair and was interested in this era. I bought him the rest of the series - he devoured them!
