As a child who struggled with Dyslexia (and has now become an Educational Therapist helping others to read); spelling, and reading rules, in general, were difficult topics, despite my love of words. When I decided that I wanted to help children learn to read and discovered that, in fact, there is a logic to reading, I attempted to read through dictionaries and search everything I could to find out the history and etymology within English words. I tried to test specific reading rules to see how they worked, took certification classes, and bought copious materials. I found an overwhelming about of information. Unfortunately, most of it, inconsistent, missing explanations, or in many cases, just incorrect. Additionally, these resources are geared for a young audience and appear to dismiss a wide variety of relevant words to an adult reader. Eide is the only one who fully committed to breaking down the language as systematically as possible, and in it, readers will find rich appendixes and in-depth explanations. This is the first book that productively framed my learning. It is clear, logical, concivce, and well organized. Furthermore, this book has given me the tools to generate reading programs for students that make sense to my mind and the kiddos I teach. Thank you!! Review: Very Helpful for Teaching English - Great for those teaching or learning the basics of English. This book was purchased because it was recommended from a special education teacher.

Exciting, Thrilling, Must Read!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book and the entire Logic of English curriculum line. I cannot say enough good things about it!! The journey of "Uncovering the Logic of English" has truly been a great joy and thrill in my life. It is incredibly liberating and exciting to understand the why behind English. Growing up, I always felt like language was a guessing game and when it came to spelling, I was a failure. Logic of English (LOE) has brought healing to my literacy crisis and is helping me provide a solid, unmatched, language arts education in my homeschool. LOE's multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham approach emphasizes critical thinking and discovery of English language patterns. In her book, "Uncovering the Logic of English", Denise gives clear, concise explanations addressing the so-called inconsistencies that seem to plague our language with countless "exceptions" or "sight words". The LOE curriculum is fully integrated to cover all primary language arts needs including phonics, reading, spelling, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. I have a passion for this book and curriculum and I believe in LOE's mission to make the ability to read a reality for everyone. Lets all work together to fight illiteracy! Read this book! Try the curriculum! You won't be sorry. Many thanks to Denise and the entire LOE team!

A Wonderful Book, But Very Rule-Governed and Technical--Maybe Not the Best for Children
The knowledge in this book isn't new--it's at the heart of every good phonics program--but it is presented is such a way by Mrs. Eide that makes it accessible, clear, and logical, perhaps for the first time in many readers' lives. It seems like every generation needs a fresh, new voice. This is exactly what native English speakers who are poor spellers (and poor readers) need. The intended audience for this book is clearly adults--either those who have a struggling child they want to help or adults who are struggling themselves. While the bulk of the book is the chapters on explaining the 30 spelling rules, there are some great appendices in the back--sound-to-spelling reference, advanced phonograms, irregular verbs list, irregular plurals list, common prefixes and suffixes, variations between British English and English in the colonies, resources for her own phonics program that Edie offers through her website, and a good bibliography that has some favorite classics in it, including "Why Johnny Can't Read and What You Can Do about It" by Rudolf Flesch, "The ABC's and All Their Tricks" by Margaret Bishop, and "The Writing Road to Reading" by Romalda Spalding. One thing that probably should be on that list is "Reading Made Easy with Blend Phonics" by Hazel Loring, which is available for free on the Internet--just Google it. English looks confusing with its 44 sounds and 74 ways to spell those sounds and 30 spelling rules, but with a little practice, you'll soon be spelling like a champ.

POWERFUL information- Catalyst for change
This is an amazing book. I had so many ah ha moments while reading. I am not an intuitive speller and this has changed the way I spell. I so wish I had been given these phonograms and spelling rules rather than the partial phonics and the half truths of rules I was taught - and also taught to students while a public school teacher. It was the best I knew, the best the school books that were available had to offer. No longer, this is something better and potentially life changing for students. This book is the beginning. There is also a full curriculum available for purchase and free training videos on the Logic of English dot com. When we can teach kids how to read well we can make change, there is hope for the future. When criminals (most illiterate or struggling readers statistically) are taught to read, the repeat offenses are cut by staggering numbers. When education improves, the national workforce is made stronger. When adults learn a better way, even things like spell checking (when the computer can't figure out what you are trying to say either) become easier and answering your kids questions about spelling rule exceptions becomes a piece of cake. The book will point out that there really aren't so many illogical rules after all. There is no doubt that we need to do better in this country with educating our students and I think this book and the Logic of English program can improve what we are capable of. Spelling can make sense, reading can get easier for those who struggle. This is powerful information. This information can be a catalyst for change.

We are not native English speakers, so we needed desperately some support to help our children understand English language after we have finished understanding it... :). This book proved to be very useful for us as well and using parallel with the videos and the app makes a better understanding (this starting to look like a paid advertisement, but it's not...still, but I hope it will be... :) ) The only problem is that it is US English and we've been warned in school to try to avoid US pronunciation to learn, but still haven't found a better way and spending almost their whole day in school will be a greater influence on their English we just may get deepened by the explanation from this book.

Unassailable. In three months I wasn't able to master on tenth of the phonograms. The idea is good but it's simply not useful. What a pity!
