Dissection: Photographs of a Rite of Passage in American Medicine 1880 1930

I bought for a med student. Very interesting to see how things have changed over the years.

This is an interesting examination of a subject that I'd not read about, and one that I probably would not have chosen to pursue, except that the irreverence of the cover illustration attracted me and aroused my curiosity about this phase of medical training. Once I began to read the text I was quite caught up with the different aspects of this topic and how they have changed. Very thought provoking. Too bad that the picture quality is quite uneven.

Bought used like new but came with ALOT of damage to the binding and hardcover and the pages have a good indent in them. Should of been listed used-good, going to buy new next time. Really enjoy the book good read and graphic photos of autopsies if you're into that stuff.

This is excellent historical content, either if you're into medicine or not. It could also work as a guide to dissecting your human in case he/she stops buying you food and toys.

I bought this as a gift for my boss, a doctor. We all loved it. Great antique photos, info, history. Great for anyone who's interested in the stages the medical field has gone thru.

Pretty twisted and cool.

On ne peut pas dire que ce n'est pas un "beau livre" : si le format est de taille moyenne, l'édition est de très bonne qualité, les photos étant bien lisibles. Justement. Parce que le sujet de ce livre, ce sont les dissections, que suivent et pratiquent(peut-être plus pour très longtemps)les étudiants en médecine. Avec tout le folklore carabin attaché à ces séances, comme en témoignent les photographies ici rassemblées. Elles proviennent des facultés de médecine américaines, mais tout médecin français se rémémorera sans peine ses propres séances de travaux dirigés. C'est sans doute la raison pour laquelle ce livre est plutôt destiné à un public averti, sous peine de choquer. Le folklore carabin des salles de dissection, qui s'inscrit dans un rituel particulier (voir le très intéressant livre universitaire du Dr Emmanuelle GODEAU : L'esprit de corps. Sexe et mort dans la formation des internes en médecine), est difficile à comprendre hors contexte. Dans notre société où l'on ne côtoie plus la mort sinon aseptisée, à la télé ou au cinéma, la fréquentation des cadavres (dans un cadre réglementé et universitaire s'entend) est mal vue et sévèremment jugée : le CCNE n'est-il pas en faveur de l'interdiction pour les études de médecine de toute dissection au profit des techniques virtuelles(numériques) d'apprentissage de l'anatomie (Avis N°111 sur les problèmes éthiques posés par l'utilisation des cadavres à des fins de conservation ou d'exosoition muséale)? Il n'en reste pas moins que ce livre est vraiment intéressant, les auteurs livrant un texte éclairant ces pratiques, ce "rituel de passage", et donnant une bonne analyse de ces photographies. Un livre pour un public averti, pas seulement médical puisque les anthropologues ou les historiens de la photographie devraient y trouver matière à réfléchir.

It was a present for a future doctor, he liked it very much. The delivering was in time, in the first day they planned.

Amazing, sometimes disturbing but if you buy this kind of book that's exactly what you'd expect ! Fantastic quality photos and very interesting text.
