Best for academics
This book is recommended for academics and researchers. This book size is really big and it covers many things .It covers a lot of mathematics derivations .I will not recommend this book for practising engineers.Because it is more research oriented , it is not of much use for practical field engineers .One engineer will need a lot of time to grasp the material from this book .Sometimes one will feel he is lost in the forest.Summary added after 4 years of my initial review: This book is for understanding the concept and analysis of protection relays. i am sure the author is well versed both in concept and application. But he has not provided much from the application point of view to reduce the book size. For application, Read Protective Relay Application guide by Alstom or Art and science of Protective Relaying by Mason.

Outstanding Power System Protection book.
Outstanding system protection book. Much of the SEL Prot 401 course is either directly pulled from this book or very similar to it. This is a free e-book on IEEE for members. Consider that, if you're an IEEE member, before purchasing. However, your money will not be wasted if you decide to purchase this book.

Good Book
This book deals with the area of conventional power system protection. The topics covered in this book include basic concepts of protection system, relay logic, basics of setting selection, transmission line protection systems, bus protection, Transformer and reactor protection, HVDC protection, SSR protection, Protection coordination, Generator and motor protection. The book also covers complex topics like system aspects of protection, reliability of the protection system, and Makov modeling of protection systems. The book was first published in 1998, so it doesn't cover the area of smart grid or application of PMU's in power system protection. But this is a good reference book for both researchers and engineers and it`s currently the best book in the area of power system protection. The book comes with a demo protection software cd.

Protection Bible
The book is a very good compendium on Power System Protection, I strongly advise my students to use it in their life as protection engineers. The book presents all the basics of protection as well as the advanced protection schemes for different applications.

Power System Protection
Power System Protection (IEEE Press Series on Power Engineering) I have personally used this book for my resurch in power Engineering and i found it as a complete source for reference and fault analysis. Paul has explained in a step by step manner each calculations. Must be a excellent power protection book.

It is Ok but a bit outdated and the information does not flow very well; sort of cut and paste stuff but that probably due to a very large amount of data. There is a lot in this book but maybe could have been more concise rather than never ending story telling;it's unrivaled for the amount of data it holds in but no so much "pure water" (to try and cover power protection systems by putting to much in one can hardly get anything out of it)
