Kitchen Essential, Recipe included with review
I have to admit to liking kitchen gadgets, but when I first saw one of these I thought it was a little silly, I only bought because I did not have prime and I was bringing up my cart to enough for free shipping. Once I started using this, I wonder how I ever managed to get a quart of strawberries prepared before I owned one of these. It works well on all sizes of berries, occasionally I might have to "stem" a berry twice to get all of the stem off, but usually it only takes one try. As my hands have gotten "older" I find using this not only saves time, it is easier on my hands. With this and the strawberry slicer I can prepare strawberries for shortcake in only a few minutes, and the mostly even slices from a strawberry slicer make for a nicer looking presentation when I serve dessert. When choosing strawberries, I go by appearance first, and the aroma second, the stronger the aroma of the berries, the better they will taste, and the less sugar needed to sweeten them. So if you see someone in the grocery "smelling" the strawberries, they are probably not crazy. : ) Just a note on the recipe, I had never seen strawberry shortcake on actual cake until I was in my 30's My mother always made strawberry shortcake on biscuits. My kids will probably never forget the day that I saw Emeril Lagasse making strawberry shortcake on biscuits on his show and I shouted out to my family "See, I'm not crazy!" : ) I like strawberry shortcake on biscuits because the less sweet taste of the biscuits keeps the fresh fruit flavor of the berries from being overwhelmed by the taste of cake. My favorite shortcake: 1 quart ripe strawberries. 1 package Pillsbury Grands Honey Butter Biscuits 2 to 4 teaspoons of sugar, brown, raw, or table adjust level of sweetness to your taste, I use less of the sugar if I am adding the brown sugar. Real whipped cream. I usually use the refrigerated type in a can, for a lactose intolerant version use Cool Whip, thawed for about half an hour (see note at end) when preparing strawberries, I cut off any discolored areas, or any really mushy areas with a paring knife once they have been washed and drained, and had the stems removed. Sometimes it is almost impossible to find almost perfect berries. I slice the strawberries directly into a medium sized mixing bowl, lightly sprinkle with sugar, mix gently with a spoon. Bake the biscuits according to package directions Let the biscuits cool slightly after removing them from the oven. Split the biscuits in half, I generally use a total of 4 half biscuits per serving spoon the sliced sweetened berries over the biscuits and top with the whipped cream. Serve and enjoy! For toddlers and preschool age children, I break the biscuits into bite sized pieces and mix with some of the berries in a bowl and then top with the whipped cream. (note) I have gotten more lactose as I have gotten older, the Cool Whip is not as good at least in my opinion, as the whipped cream, but if I am feeling a bit wild and crazy I mix the Cool Whipped and real whipped cream half and half for my serving, so I don't envy everyone that gets to eat theirs with real whipped so much

Must have for strawberry lovers!!
I used this once on some fresh strawberries I purchased, and as someone who dislikes biting around strawberry cores, this little gadget is life changing. It's so cute and small but does the job so well (and fast!). I'm glad I went for the name brand!

I don't usually buy gadgets that do one job, but this one is worth it.
I purchase red items for my kids on valentines day, then make a game out of it. I sent one of these to my son's family and another to my college age son (along with a red hand mixer for the college kiddo who attends University of Alabama.....roll Tide y'all!). Both were told they had to wait to open their box for further instruction. Feb 13th, I sent cash via Venmo and told them I'd send a shopping list in the morning. I sent the shopping list for cheesecake stuffed strawberries (strawberries, cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and graham cracker) The game is even more fun if you send the wife $5 and tell her to pick up strawberries and powdered sugar, then send the hubs money to pick up cream cheese and vanilla, but don't tell either of them that you messaged the other one). Then I finally told them they could open their amazon box and they found this little contraption which perfectly removes strawberry stems. They had fun creating a little treat (dipped the cream cheese side into graham cracker crumbs). My kids love a goofy little game. This does a great job removing the stems.
