Great deal for the price. Portable, not cheap. EZ setup.
For the price, I have to say that this is a great deal.If you want a lot of light and can live with a 6x9 screen, but you're not willing to shell out thousands for LED lighting, then this is probably what you're looking for. When all of the lights are on, it provides the CFL equivalent of 2400 watts of incandescent lighting, at 5500K. I produce a WebTV program called TEA Party Insights, where I make extensive use of the chromakey screen. I film in front of the chromakey screen and then fill in the background in post production, with slides from Keynote (sort of like Powerpoint on steroids, but only available for the Mac). Some reviewers have complained that the stands seem flimsy. That's not the case. It's portable and therefore light weight. I can only imagine that those who call it flimsy failed to consider that when using stands like these you don't have to tighten the clamps as if you were tightening C-clamps for a welding project. Turn the thumb screw till you feel resistance and then a quarter turn more. That's all that's needed. The other complaint that I have read about this kit is concerning instructions. To that, I will just say that I had the kit assembled in 20 minutes, without opening the instructions. It's a no-brainer. But after assembling everything, I did read the instructions and found that although they may be short, they should be more than adequate to guide someone who may not immediately see where things should go together. Each soft box has four lamps and they are controlled by two switches that will turn on two lamps at a time. With all four lights on in all three soft boxes, you have 2400 watts (equiv.). The soft boxes can be configured to be horizontal or vertical format, regardless of mount and can also be mounted either horizontally or vertically, for maximum configurability. The kit comes with three muslin backdrops - green, white and black. I have the green backdrop hung on the rod and the others clamped to the back with plastic hardware clamps. They're the same clamps that are called photo clamps, but you can buy a pack of more than a dozen assorted sizes of clamps at the hardware story, for the price of two that are called photo clamps. In fact, I'm really glad that I bought this set, with the additional backdrops. You see, like most backdrops, these are rather thin and I have a window behind the backdrop. Even with the blinds closed, enough light comes in during the afternoon that it would show through one layer. But by hanging the other backdrops behind the green backdrop, it blocks that light. Of course, it also gives me the black and white backdrops, should I ever need them. The only negative thing I can say about this set is that none of the power cords for the soft boxes are long enough to reach the floor if that soft box is used on the boom stand, when extended to its maximum height and reach. The cord for the soft box that is to be used on the boom stand should be about two feet longer than the rest. But that's so minor that it's not enough to reduce my rating by a star. An extension cord fixed that.If you intend to take the kit on location, you can remove the CFL lamps and put them back in the boxes in which they were shipped, with protective shaped styrofoam blocks. You would be hard pressed to find a better deal at this price. The only thing that I could ask for, is a 10 foot wide version of this kit.

You get what you pay for....
The lighting in this kit may seem bright to the human eye, but your camera won't think so. I use fast primes to shoot portrait work, but the lighting still doesn't provide enough shadows and depth to make your pictures pop. Considering that I already bought it, I'm not going to go through the hassle of packing it back up for a return, and it does create for useable soft lighting if you use your creativity and imagination. Your best bet is to use the lighting as close as possible to your subject without having the soft-boxes go into your frame.I will add that the back drop will get the most use from me. It's not top notch quality, but it gets the job done. The green backdrop is especially useful for digital backgrounds where you can just select the color range in Photoshop. The black is great for the "floating heads" effect common in portrait work. I would suggest sending the backdrops into dryer or ironing to get the wrinkles out from being folded for so long.A couple things to note, although it comes with a carrying bag, this kit is not ideal AT ALL for portability. It took me over an hour to set it up the first time and quite frankly, I left it up and I store it in the garage when not in use. The softbox assembly is what takes the most time, it's just a horrible design (4 metal rods portrude from 4 holes in the fixture and need to bent down in order to fit into the box). And don't get the idea that this would be a cheap softbox to buy for your strobes... the softboxes depend on the light fixture to stay erect. I'm sure you could find someway to get a softbox holder for your flash/strobe, but for the amount of money and time to do this, you're better off just buying the right softbox for your flash/strobe.I want to conclude that this product CAN be used for what its meant to be and that you CAN get decent portraits from it, BUT it'll be so much easier for you to just go out and buy the right things for the job. If you can find the backdrop alone, I would recommend that as a decent item, granted that you can find it for dirt cheap (like $50 or less). The lights are just horrible though. If I were to do it all over again, I would put $200 into a 3rd party flash/strobe for my system camera (like Metz, Nissin, Yongnuo, etc.) and buy a $10 bed sheet and some clothes pins... I guarantee I'd be able to get as good, if not better, portraits and images than with this set up, and not to mention, it'll be much easier to set-up and deal with.TLDR: Don't buy this! Put your money into 3rd party flash for you system AND learn how to use it to make amazing pictures; you'll get better results and you're blood pressure won't go up!
