N Gauge D51 200 2016 – 8 Railway Train Steam Locomotive

Strong, powerful. A real work-horse. Excellent detail. The flywheels are not heavy enough for the motor, so it takes some getting used to. Care must be taken so it won’t derail when starting.

I am very happy and satisfied with the Kato D51 200 locomotive. It arrived much early than expected and in excellent condition. It is highly detailed and it ran quietly and smoothly on my track layout. I was surprised to see that it had a coreless motor and two brass flywheels. That explains the quiet and smooth operation. The quality is excellent. It comes with a Rapido coupler on the tender. However, a newer style knuckle coupler is provided if you want to change it out.

It arrived today and I am so happy with this purchase. I have collected trains for years but my home is too small for the train tables I have had in years past. Like a collection of fine watches, I love to look at them and display them for all to see...j

I had to sadly return it as my corners are too tight for the length of this locomotive.

Very nice runner and very detailed

One or more of the tie rods (the things that connect the drive wheels on the outside) was loose on arrival. It was pretty subtle; I didn't realize that was the problem, all I knew was that the loco would roll a couple inches and then stop (as though it had derailed, though it was still very much on the tracks). After some time, the tie rod came off one wheel entirely and that's when I realized what was wrong.

Surprisingly this steam locomotive was very fragile. Getting it out of the box was also difficult and the small plastic bar connecting the locomotive & coal tender got broken with in two days of usage.

Bonne finition faire attention fragile

以前から機関車のプラモデルを組み立てたく、本製品を購入。しかしながら機関車らしく、細工が細かく、かなり苦戦。車輪の駆動部など忠実に再現されているからか、かなり手こずる羽目に。と言うのも極めて小さなネジで各部を留める構造になっており、拡大鏡と眼鏡専用のドライバーを使わないと無理である。しかも車輪どうしをネジで繋ぐ軸が極めて細いプラスチックで出来ているため、下手をすると簡単に折れてしまう。小さなネジは仕方ないとして、せめてこの部分は金属製で然るべきと思われるが。一方、出来上がった姿はと言うと、テカリを抑えた黒色で、それなりの存在感がある。飾るにはもってこいの姿である。

小さかった頃から、よく目にしたD51(保存機)だったので、現在のKATOの技術で鉄道模型として、手元に置けるのは幸せかもしれません。いつでも机上で安全に無煙走行可能ですし・・・ 機種は200号機なので目にしていた一般的なものとは異なりますが、造形もしっかり作りこまれており当時を思い出し飽きません。
