In brief --- if combined with the DVD which demonstrates the techniques described in the book of the same title. AND some previous training by a qualified teacher of internal arts basics (I would recommend someone who is familiar with Dr. Yang's system, of course) a novice practitoner should have every hope of learning Shaolin White Crane Qigong.Self taught qigong is like self taught yoga --- perhaps not the best idea to begin with, as there are many ways to make mistakes and train improperly, to say nothing of the potential for injuring oneself. Precisely following the directions in this book and carefully observing the details of the demonstrations in the dvd should prevent the student from straying too far. No substitute for a teacher in the room with you, but as usual, the publishers at YMAA have produced the next best thing.I will add that many karate practitioners looking to expand their training and make it more complete and healthful might find it worthwhile to check out this subject. As karate was one of the first martial arts I studied, I was quite intrigued to learn more about its internal Chinese roots.

good but lacking narration
apparently i purchased a version of the dvd that lacked narration. even as such, it is a fantastic demonstration of both hard and soft qigong which is easy to follow. i think that to get the most out of it it would be very beneficial to have the book of the same name along with dvd. in my opinion dr. yang is a true master of traditional arts and i respect his teaching efforts.

Well Respected & Well-Known Martial Arts Instructor
I've only so far sampled the Soft Qi Gong which alone is 94 min long & was tiring for me. I felt very stretched out after & as I was doing it could feel the smaller tendons in my spine & chest working.Since it is narrated in English by a person who's native language is English with English subtitles as Dr. Yang demonstrates, this was easy to follow with a good flow. There are video clips on his site for all his media at ymaa com

The training beyond the classroom
I very much enjoy this video. The chinese masters (including Dr. Yang) have a healthy power and softness of movement that is so obvious to the eye and typically so lacking in most western martial artists, but how does one train that characteristic? For the Southern White Crane system, I believe the Hard and Soft Qigong sets presented in this video are the answer. The sets are subtle, and there is much in them to keep the student learning for years.

Most Excellent.
Dr Yang's Qigong dvds are the best. This one was no exception. My favorite Qigong DVDs.
