no agenda except to understand a slave’s perspective
Worth the read to help understand what slaves went through even though “freed”. Loved the spiritual undertones and the fierceness of Jane.

great inside look
This book gripped all the way through….the language, the history. Easy read but so important to recall the past and the challenges into the future.

No subtle subtext
I put off reading this classic novel for many years, thinking it would be a kind of sentimental horror journey. How wrong I was. This is the first book I've read in which the subject, told through the eyes of a slave - several slaves, in fact - is a portrait of the south during slavery and the decades after it that comes through as honest and real. The lives spun out are extraordinary - white as well as black. And the sense of equal human beings struggling with life in an unequal society is the most extraordinary touch of all. Even the best of the books I've read by white authors set in slave times in the US, and with slave characters, have a kind of emotional discombobulation that keeps a palpable barrier between black and white characters. In this book the barrier of slavery is there, but the human reality of every man and woman on each side of it is powerful. There is no subtle textual hint that says, always, "this person is a black slave, a poor victim; this person is a white owner, a beast." Instead, each person lives out his role in his particularity, and almost always with the dignity most of us strive for, whatever twisted culture we're in. I will probably edit this review when the book has done its cooking in my brain - when, I trust, the richness of the book may rise more readily to my pen.

A call for courage
Of course the book is superb. And how could such a small little me explain the utter power the words have to cover any white person in the USA with shame. Oh no, that is incorrect, not any white person, in fact, the side of ignorance and hatred born out of ignorance is now growing in this country, becoming stronger. I will do my best to do better. I will try harder to find the courage to fight it when I see it; to step up and engage. As did Miss Jane.

Riviting story of what it has been like for colored people!
This was a book cĺub choice. Growing up in upstate New York I had no idea of what it meant to be a colored person. Today I'm seeing greater diversity among peoples, greater acceptance. Jane Pittman is a great example of what prayer and faith can accomplish. It wasn't easy for her and her friends and was made with not just a little sacrifice on their part. She stood and was not found wanting! Bless her soul. Great story of courage under extreme circumstances. She is a hero for our day! We need more hero's today! Ruth Orme

A book for our times.
A book appropriate for the times, the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman gives the reader an appreciation of the life of an emancipated slave in the Deep South. The dialect, the dialogue, the distress and the courage of a free black woman are simultaneously touching, enlightening and, seemingly, authentic.

This woman has had an unbelievable life from being born a slave to black power

Gutsy Book
I thought this book was a true story and was surprised to learn it was fiction. It is gutsy and harsh from the word go and I have nothing but admiration for Jane and her "son". Well worth reading and an interesting take on the shame of slavery and racial discrimination.

Soooo toll geschrieben!
