Clarity without sacrificing complexity

I am a researcher in religious studies with some self-taught background in philosophy. I just realized recently that the field of logic has advanced greatly, leaving behind many traditional philosophical propositions and modes of reasoning. So I tried to teach modern logic to myself but found it to be very complicated. I am very grateful to have finally come across this book. Professor Lee has a way of making highly complicated concepts understandable, without sacrificing the complexity of academic debates behind controversial issues (these are indeed my focus). I am stunned at the degree to which she can combine clarity with complexity. She is apparently not only a great logician, but also a great teacher. I am grateful for the contributions she has made to the field and to the public.

Great introduction to the study of logic.

I took a logic course in college many years ago and wanted to bone up on a topic I've always been interested in. This book does a good job of doing that. I recommend it highly.

Very well ogranized

I am studying some AI and realized my knowledge of basic logic terms is really lacking. This book covers the basics well. For me it is a good walk though the language needed to understand the language of logic (though I had to purchase a dictionary to go along with it.)

Logic: A Complete Introduction

This is probably one of (if not) the best introductory books available on logic and reasoning that I’ve come across. And for someone like myself, who often works hard to follow the reasoning and local steps of an argument, Logic: A Complete Introduction by Siu-Fan Lee seems an ideal starting place. However, after the first couple of chapters the book becomes rather difficult and, I felt, more useful to students of formal logic than to inquisitive, general readers like myself, who need huge amounts of staying power and familiarity with new terminology and concepts to remain onboard if one is to persevere through the whole of the book.Nonetheless, this is the best (and most basic!) book on logic available and Siu-Fan Lee does an admirable job, considering the complexity of the subject, at explaining the subject for both beginners and more advanced students of logic.I should add that I have the kindle version which is easy to navigate, and diagrams and tables within the text are easily enlarged so they can be seen clearly.I hope you find my review helpful.

Highly Recommended

After a lifetime of dabbling in philosophy without tackling logic, I bought a couple of books on the subject and was soon totally lost. This book saved me. It starts off with the basics and moves on to categorical logic, then propositional logic, then predicate logic. What I particularly liked about the author's approach was that she never takes the reader's understanding for granted, but illustrates every point with discursive explanations, examples, and exercises. I can't recommend the book highly enough to anyone wanting a basic grounding in what can appear to the beginner to be a daunting subject.

and the author explains concepts in great detail, much to her credit

I haven't finished reading this book, as yet. Generally, it's very straightforward for such an abstract subject, and the author explains concepts in great detail, much to her credit. However, unfortunately, some sillies have cropped up. I'm not sure whether they are printers' typos or author's oversights, but these errors, though few, do undermine your confidence in the book, particularly if you are a beginner on the subject. If these errors were corrected, I have every reason to believe that this book would be of great value to both the novice and more advanced student.

You'll need to concentrate and reread passages to get your head around the concepts.

The book I read before this was on Quantum Mechanics and found I could understand what was 'going on' more than this book. Not the authors fault, just the subject matter!

More academic than practical

Very useful and practical in parts, academic and interesting (but not necessarily useful) elsewhere. If you only want the practical application of logic then this book contains a lot that you won't want or need.
