El Pergamino de la Seduccion: Una Novela (Spanish Edition)

La novela es una historia a dos tiempos, a través de protagonistas que reviven las circunstancias, pensamientos y sentimientos de Juana de Castilla, despojada de sus derechos reales por los tres hombres que le fueron más cercanos: su padre el rey Fernando el Católico, su marido el archiduque Felipe por quien tuvo una pasión desbordada, y su hijo Carlos quien sería rey del imperio español y emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico.Es interesante la mirada sobre porqué convenía que a Juana se le calificara de loca y qué de su comportamiento permitió justificar su encierro.Esta trama es la que le da gran valor al texto.La segunda, la historia de seducción de la adolescente Lucía por parte de Manuel, el historiador apasionado por la vida de Juana y descendiente de sus crueles custodios, es otra cosa. La autora podría haberse abocado únicamente a la biografía novelada de Juana y sus circunstancias, descrita magistralmente, sin necesidad de un segundo tiempo y trama en el siglo XXI.

I finished reading Gioconda Belli’s El Pergamino de la Seducción a few weeks ago, and I find that much as the characters of the novel are obsessed with the story of Juana la Loca, I also have difficulty tearing my mind away from this book. Lucía, the adolescent protagonist, under the influence of a middle-aged professor and his elderly aunt, dons clothing that ostensibly belonged to Juana, and in fact feels that she actually becomes Juana as the professor tells her the story of that ill-fated queen.As in other works by Belli, strong women come into their own by leading a double life, often influenced by important female figures from the past and also by contemporary men of firm convictions who become their lovers. The seduction of Belli’s stories for the reader lies in trying to imagine how the secret, hidden life of the female protagonist will become her one authentic life. Passion and loss are part of the process, but in the end two identities are reclaimed in El Pergamino de la Seducción —that of Lucía and that of Juana. How history may have misjudged the lived experience of Juana has much to tell us about how women must insist on uncovering the feminine historical experience that has been covered over by past priorities.

One questions the reason to present the life of Juana de Castilla through the narrative of a pseudo-teacher of history whose sexual advances and encounters with a very young, defenseless and naive student represents an abusive and dominating behavior typical of the "me too" sexual harassments so demeaning of females. If the author wanted to present the strong character and virtues of Juana de Castilla as a brave and exemplary woman, she is using the wrong approach in the book.

Excelente recuento en una narrativa cautivante. La autora hace uso de hechos reales dentro de una novela en un ambiente de ficción.

Me interesó mucho la historia con un giro sorpresivo al final

Está muy bien escrito, con una impecable investigación histórica. Sin embargo es demasiado romántico para mi gusto. La historia paralela a la de Juana es muy ligera. No fue de mi total agrado.
