Flawless German quality, lovely results.
I am really glad I tried this device, despite initial hesitancy and obvious fears around damage from tanning units and -- of course -- tanning per se.I have never been a tanning worshipper and am the 'English rose' skin type, i.e. pasty white, ha. Having said that, I do tan relatively easily in the natural sun and have never lain out in the sun in my life, at least never habitually--maybe the odd few minutes here and there. I have some freckles and moles I have been careful of, too. Despite all this I was curious to see if the Efbe-Schott unit seemed appropriate for me as I am equally aware that there can be some benefits to tanning in considerable moderation, and I don't mind losing my pasty-white appearance.Equally, though, I'm hyper aware of the damage a unit can potentially do and would use something like this in small doses. This tanning unit has been a pleasure to use and is superbly made and robust, just as I would expect from a solid German manufacturer that's been in operation since 1932!The first thing to note is how heavy and sturdy the unit is, and how well-packaged. It came with good instructions and two elasticated protective goggles which, alas, I cannot use as they give me headache as soon as I put them on. The headache definitely comes from the goggles and not the device, and it's due to how they press into the eye socket rather than sitting comfortably over, so I have bought adhesive protectors instead. No amount of adjustment could get the goggles right for me.The unit itself is easy to operate. Simply set it down on a flat surface with plenty of space and ventilation around, switch on the timer control (30 minutes max, but start on 15 maximum), adjust to the time required, and sit back. As other reviewers have rightly said, there is no need to sit up close and if you do, you will regret it. The instructions are clear; follow them. A tape measure is also included, so you know you have got it spot on; who else but the Germans would think of doing this? Thumbs up! This is not even mentioned on the Product Description.(By the way, no idea why this unit does not feature on the Efbe-Schott website. Manufacturer: address this, it's an important part of your product range). Efbe-Schott make many small appliances and this seems to be their first foray into tanning or skin products, though I may be wrong. The manufacturer markets this as an 'upper body tanner'.I'd say you can use this device for a whole body tan or upper body tan, depending on your positioning. Yes, if you are a tanning addict, you'll consider this 'just' a facial or upper body tanner but if, like me, you want to use it conservatively and cautiously, you will appreciate that just having it on in the same room and keeping moving naturally will tan all of you, and you needn't sit right near it or stay stock still. I would suggest that for a more even tan you do the 'get on with chores' sort of thing, as I did!Switch on, strip off (well, strip first) and then just forget it is in the room. You can only do this if your goggles or protectors allow; the ones supplied will not give you any ability to see, but my sunglasses do, so when I did the chores I wore those. They do offer appropriate solarium protection and aren't standard sungasses so be careful there; stick to comprehensive blocking protection where eyes are concerned. Your outdoor sunglasses won't offer adequate protection and you must never use any tanning appliance without goggles or protectors.Believe me, even at a distance of around 7', even when I was sure it hadn't caught me, it had, and the result has been a slight glowy feeling and a surprisingly nice biscuit-coloured tan to chest, back, neck and face, with no discomfort or peeling. The skin did not dry or tighten afterwards. However, if you sat closer and didn't move around, remember this unit's powerful and so you could get discomfort then.I'd say that this gentle approach, 15 minutes maximum at a distance and not sitting glued to it, will give you a more even and natural look, and also it takes away that 'what am I supposed to do to pass the time' boredom. I'd say this can be a chores tanner, ha; I'll run it every couple of weeks when I am busy in the kitchen.Cautions:- don't sit too close; follow the guidelines.- use the goggles or buy an alternative; never tan free of eye care protection.- ensure other people and pets will not enter the room or tanning area. This is to ensure they do not get burned or eye damaged. This is a serious caution; you could blind a pet if you sit using this with a pet in proximity. And a child, well, just don't go there either.- wait a week between sessions. I saw the effect suddenly several days afterwards! Suddenly everyone was complimenting me. Of course, I had just been to the Caribbean too... ; )- don't let the device run hot, by several users running it in succession. Remember that electronic appliances are for use with care and a gentle hand, so keep it stored nicely, keep it dust free, and allow proper ventilation and cooling. Having said that, it will not run two sessions immediately consecutively; it will stay off until it's ready. But you get the gist; be kind to it if you want longevity. The device is not the cheapest but I have never looked for 'cheap' when it comes to something that could have safety connotations, and European manufacture with safety accreditations is paramount for me.Last, I haven't touched on the fact that it has four inbuilt session memories for four family members/users. These were not relevant to me, as I am single, probably due to being pasty-white and boring-looking...'pale and interesting' is the British term! Well, not for much longer!

Good product...but beware plug adaptors
Worked well...until it just stopped. It had been used only 3 times and for not more than 20 minutes/session. Then it stopped. Thought it had overheated but it is clearly a power failure as even the fan doesn't work.ED: Turns out it had blown the fuse in the plug adaptor (unit comes with an EU plug). It runs perfectly direct from mains socket.Performance is good, especially if you can change the height of the unit. This gives you upper/lower body tanning.Manufacturers, in the instruction manual, specify the replacement lamp model. Whether or not these are available or not I do not know. However, it is worth remembering that this unit appears to be a discontinued model, at least according to the websites of other suppliers. Hopefully, the replacement lamp is standard.Overall then, a good product - but run it direct from the mains.

WARNING - DO NOT do what I did!
I don't normally write reviews as in truth I can't be bothered but I'm writing this as a warning. I have skin that tans very easily and rarely burns so I though I'd be smart and sit closer and for longer than recommended. After about 40 minutes I switched it off. My skin wasn't even pink and I was wondering if I'd wasted my money. It wasn't until a few hours later my skin started to tingle and turn red. In short I have quite bad sunburn and feeling very stupid. This is a powerful lamp and I know I will go brown but don't do what I did- even if it doesn't feel hot on your skin like stand up professional sun beds this works!! I might see if I can update this once my skin calms down.

I brought this item as I was fed up with trying to get the time to go to tanning beds in their opening hours. I tan very well and use tanning beds for 10 minutes at a time. I read the instructions (which are poorly written) and decided I would try 8 minutes ( which is fine according to the instructions) I was over 40 cm away. And it FRIED my skin, I had blisters all over my face and my neck. And I was violently sick. I’ve had to pay out over £20 on different creams/ lotions and antihistamines. I’ve missed a day off work and struggled through three others. My work is commission based and people were just avoiding me I looked so bad. never really burn but this was the worst pain I had ever experienced and to go with it I got hells itch ( google it) it felt like thousands of tiny red ants biting my skin. I’ve never been disappointed enough to write a bad review but this was appauling. And it has destroyed my skin!

Read the instructions carefully
Early days but I’m extremely pleased so far - I had to leave a review to point out that the lady who is complaining like mad that she got burnt was sitting “over 40cm away..” PLEASE people read the instructions, you are supposed to be over 4 foot (120cm) away - the lovely efficient Germans even include a 120cm tape measure in the box! It is clear from the reviews that you must adhere to this or you will hurt yourself. So far I love mine. I’m taking it very steady and have only had 4 short sessions but I’m seeing a glow and a lovely even skin tone already.

Disappointing for the price
Not worth the money. You have to sit there for like 30 minutes and the results are pretty weak. Sit close and you just burn
