Tighten by hand and then a 1/4 turn with a spanner worked for me.

is 1/2 inch the standard size for all flexis? My new taps have (short) flexis I want to extend. Can't tell what their size is.

I believe they can be 1/2 or 3/4 inch. You need to check. Not only that you will need to make sure the other end connecting to the taps is the correct size. In this case M10
