Overcoming Underearning(TM): Overcome Your Money Fears and Earn What You Deserve

Good money exercises, contradictory attitudes towards charitable activities
There are several good exercises in the book to help you change your attitude towards money. Many of these exercises could also be adapted to other attitudes you'd like to change. However, I found her ideas in regards to doing volunteer work baffling. She seems to think that unless you can make money at it (i.e. start a nonprofit, or work for one at a high income) you should "let go of it" as you would other bad habits that are dragging you down and keeping you from making more money. What? Even if you enjoy it? Cutting back a bit I can see, but giving it up entirely?Money is fine as far as it goes, but it doesn't solve everything. Someone has to actually do the work, and in the case of a nonprofit, as inexpensively as possible. And when a nonprofit is asking for donations, how does it justify the high salaries of people who are in many cases doing the same work as the people in for-profit businesses? In most cases, it can't.Another example of this type of strange thinking is in the last chapter (well-written as far as detailing along the way how the program helped her make positive changes in her life), where her workshop student Tami says "We stopped going to our church because it has a major money dysfunction." No explanation of exactly what that dysfunction was, though, followed. Maybe another edition of the book will explain it.3.5 stars. The money exercises are very interesting and useful, even if you don't have money self-esteem issues (as most of her students featured in the book seem to have), or debt problems. Her attitudes towards charitable/volunteer work, however, are strange compared with other success gurus.

She really nails it!
As a Certified Financial Planner(tm) practitioner, I am always looking for good books to recommend to clients and to people who come to my workshops on how to get their assets in gear. "Overcoming Underearning" is one that will be high on my recommended list.I have been in practice for more than 20 years and have learned that 80% of how people handle money is emotional and only about 20% is rational or well thought out. Stanny's book has a goldmine of ideas on how to uncover the emotional issues that are holding you back and gradually change your ratio so more of your decisions can be rational and less emotional.Throughout the book she gives writing exercises with structured questions to help the reader get to the root of their underearning dynamics. I can't tell you how impressed I am with her lists and with her questions. There is no doubt that she has "been there, done that" and that she is armed with powerful insights from the many workshop clients she has worked with. She knows her stuff! The book is exceptionally well written and well edited. It flows well, is easy to read, and very compelling. The power of the book is in the journaling exercises and the follow up ideas she provides. If you want to earn more, do these exercises and I think it will blow you away.I was impressed that even though I'm already a high earner and very good with my own money that I picked up quite a few great ideas that will benefit me personally. Kudos, Ms Stanny!Jan Dahlin Geiger, CFP®, Author of "Get Your Assets in Gear! Smart Money Strategies Get Your Assets in Gear! Smart Money Strategies

Surprisingly Valuable Content
If you are frustrated by a sense that you're selling yourself short in business situations due to a lack of the right tools or right self-concept, this book deftly addresses these challenges and gives excellent exercises to help you improve these areas.I picked this up at the library, but expect I will purchase it for permanent use. I wasn't particularly drawn during my scan of the book (table of contents, recommendations etc.), but somehow would get a pang when I replaced it on the library shelf. So, checked it out and stayed up till 3 a.m. reading it! Still have about 1/4 of the book to go, but I really got a lot out of it.I consider myself pretty tough in my evaluations of self-help type literature, I have read my share of it. I want it to say something new, offer substance and make sense. There's a lot of rigorous and innovative thought behind what Ms. Stanny says, and it is presented in a way that reached me.Her resource/additional reading section at the end is concise and seems carefully considered, and she explains why she has chosen each resource well. I especially found helpful her list comparing the differences between "dawdlers" and "doers".

I did receive my book in perfect condition. Actually looks a like a brand new. I borrowed this book three times from my public library then decided to have my own copy. The reading is so interesting and guess what it has changed my money situation and bank account. Do the homework and stop all the wishing thinking! This book is so complete. Understanding where you, plus actions means more money in your bank account. Loved it!

Life-Changing
This book is light on fluff and heavy on hard, eye-opening truth. It reframed my behaviors so matter-of-factly that I responded, time and again, with "Well, that's stupid. I'm not going to do that anymore." A lot of books have made a big impression on me. Only a few have changed my thinking and my life. This is one of them.

follow the advice
I bought this book after realizing I was completely and utterly frustrated with the corporate world, of which I had been a part of for 30+ years. At first, upon reading the book, I was very interested in following the direction the book was taking, but then at some point I became very frustrated at myself for not having the courage and backbone to have followed my dreams earlier in my career. After working through the frustration, I began taking control of my life, one step at a time, and am setting up my own business. I did this knowing full well I can make better decisions about what goes on in a business than those running the companies I have worked for, and I will have to answer to no one but myself one way or the other. For me the corporate life will soon end and I will leave it behind. BUY THE BOOK!

Overcoming Underearning
Love this book! Barbara Stanny explains WHY women have accepted their self-imposed limitations on their earning power, and provides simple but revealing exercises to help us change our perspective and hence our thoughts and actions regarding money. Thought-provoking and a must-read for any woman struggling financially.
