Superbly made and perfect for some dishes
Disclaimer: I almost always use Barilla brand pasta, but this was available locally and I could not find Barilla spaghettoni. It was serendipitous because I fall in love with these noodles. The first thing I noticed is the slightly rough texture of the noodles. These make them perfect for sauces that contain finely chopped ingredients because they will cling to the pasta. Cooking time for al dente is about on par with other spaghettoni I have used: 11 minutes.I love this style of pasta because the thicker noodles go perfectly with simpler sauces. I am not big on red sauces, and as a vegetarian I also eschew meat sauces. My favorite recipe for this type of noodle is to saute garlic and coarsely chopped tomatoes in olive oil. I season the saute with red pepper flakes and freshly ground black pepper. Once the saute is finished (the garlic is uniformly golden brown) and the pasta is cooked and drained I toss finely chopped fresh basil into the pasta along with a few handfuls of fresh baby spinach. I next mix in the saute and serve with grated Pecorino Romano cheese. When preparing the above recipe I noticed just how effective the texture on the noodles are at attracting clinging pieces of basil. This is a key difference to this noodle from my favorite brand and why I gave this one five stars. If you cook with spaghettoni this one is worth checking out.
