It won't damage or scratch the fine wood surface or top of my desk? Anyone?

It is more like the mesh letter trays, but has a hollow bottom with just metal edges. It has rubber cushion feet on the bottom corners. It doesn't move around much because of the weight of my printer on it. I haven't had any problems with it scratching my desk top and I have slid it around plenty of times, but if you are worried about scratching your surface, you could put some thicker rubber or felt feet on the bottom corners to make sure that there is absolutely no chance of it doing so.

Does legal size paper fit it bottom drawer?

Yes, Legal size 8 1/2" x 14" paper fits in the drawer as well as 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Any paper up to 11 1/4" x 15 1/4" will fit the drawer.
