Cat RP5500 5500 Running Watts and 6875 Starting Watts Gas powered Portable Generator 490-6489

Purchased for my dad. He’s happy. I hope he doesn’t have to use it. It is worth the price. Runs quiet enough.

I purchased this gen because it is made by Cat and think it will be quality. But factory direct shipping i guess means made in China. I was powering a few circ saws, drills and lights all less than 23 amps like the data plate says but the power was poor. Had my electrician look at the gen and tells that the machine only good for 4900 watts. Now im at the jobsite without enough power. There should be law against this.

Next time we lose power for several days - we won't have to worry about food going bad, etc. Haven't tried it out yet, but will do so after the holidays and might update then.

The media could not be loaded.  This generator can really only get to about 4,000 watts not 5,500 like it says. When I received it, I opened the box and put on the wheels and feet and then put in oil and gasoline, then after six pulls of the cord I got it to run. However it was really struggling. I let it run for a minute and then tried to restart it. I started it again and the same thing happened. Then I plugged in my circular saw and the generator starting spinning in circles and chugging hard. I took this attached video of the unit spinning. After using it for ten minutes or so it calmed down and operates more normally, but like I said it only gets up to about 4,000 watts. I really don't have confidence that it will work when I need it, like if my power goes out. I will be returning this and going with a different generator.

Awful product. Horrible service centers. Even worse customer service. Dont buy! Had 22 hours on generator, a part failed. Brought it to a service facility(Cat) it was still under warranty. It was garaged and only used for one outage. It was in perfect condition. When I received it back from the warranty work they f'ed it up( green over spray, missing bolts, peeled stickers,+ alot more). So I called the facility that the work was done. Guy was a prick. He says "what do you want from a machine that has 60 hrs on it" it didnt have 60, it had 20 but either way a prick. They were not willing to help so I called customer service and they said they cant do anything for me and would not let me talk to a supervisor. Awful experience. Now I have a POS that I'm stuck with.

Bought the generator from Lowe’s for 750.00. Thought I would be a great generator. It runs good but it has a lot of dirty voltage. I had a harbor freight quiet predator that seemed to be just as strong as this without the power flickering I. My trailer. As I run a 15000 btu r v ac. And a small air compressor together the air compressor really struggles unless u turn off the ac. With the predator. I never had that problem with the predator. Also after getting it started and warm it wouldn’t want to start back. So I would smell a little gas. Then took the air filter cover off and pulled the foam filter Then it would start without hesitation. If u put the foam filter back on with the cover It would have them same non starting problem. So I just left the foam pad out of it.

Not impressed with the casting of motor, divets all over. A window unit keeps tripping 20 amp gfci outlets, the a.c unit is 4.5 amp, 515 watts. CAT support said i needed 30 amp cord converter to solve. Will not run anything of substance without 30 amp breaker cord/ converter. This generator does not come with cord. Unlike briggs&stratton storm surge 6250. The rp5500 ran ok for the first 2 nights, but now on night 3 at 30hrs the voltage output has dropped from 240v to ~200v. Again not impressed with this generator but still in the midst of hurricane florence in eastern NC. Big time let down by CAT rp5500. I dont recommend, especially without 30 amp cord
