Hot Wheels "Drag Strip Demons" . . . . some real blasts from the past . . . and some who deserved to be included, but weren't!
Hot Wheels has made some exceptional die-cast racing, custom, and stock car sets. While the bases of all of the "Drag Strip Demons" cars are very plain, the work done in casting the bodies, the authenticity of the body colors and tampos, and the wheels and tires used on their 2009 set of 30 cars and their 2010 set of 25 cars in their "Drag Strip Demons" drag racing cars is very good, and the artwork, shape and design of the hanger cards is excellent. The only complaint I have with the Hot Wheels "Drag Strip Demons" sets is they used so few body styles to create their 55-car collection. Hot Wheels originally planned to produce a Fiat-bodied Altered car, which would have been a great addition, but that car never made it into final production. But knowing that it is extremely expensive for die-cast manufacturers to create a new body casting and take it all the way to final production, I won't deduct a star for that.I do wish Hot Wheels had included more of the cars driven by the very prominent top fuel dragster, funny car or altered wheelbase or altered gassers, and super stock or pro stock class drivers of that '60's and '70's drag racing era, drivers and cars that truly embodied the title of "Drag Strip Demons". These are the drivers and cars that the "SUNDAY . . . SUNDAY . . . AT ( the name of the best drag strip nearest that radio station) COME SEE (famous driver's name) AND (another famous driver's name) MATCH RACE EACH OTHER TO SEE WHO WINS THE MONEY AND WHO PUTS WHO ON THE TRAILER! radio commercials blasted out all week before that Sunday's drag races. Some of the front engine dragster drivers whose cars easily and inexpensively could have been added to the "Drag Strip Demons" collection include, Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, Chris "The Greek" Karamesines, Leroy "Ramchargers" Goldstein, Gary Beck, John Weibe, Steve Carbone, Gary Cochran, Tom "Father of the Hemi" Hoover, Gene "The Snowman" Snow, Tony Nancy, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, and "TV" Tommy Ivo, just to name a few. Some of the great Funny Car drivers not included in the collection include, Ed "Ace" McCullough, Don Schumacher, Connie "Bounty Hunter" Kalitta, Danny Ongais, Al Bergler, Paul Radici, "Jungle Jim" Lieberman, Gene "The Snowman" Snow, Raymond Beadle, and Roger "Color Me Gone" Lindamood. One A/FX driver and car that absolutely should have been included in this collection is Gary Dyer in "Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding's Dodge" '65 Dodge Coronet A/FX car. Another great '65 Dodge Coronet A/FX driver is Roger Lindamoodr. Doug Thorley, Dick Harrell, Del Heinelt, Randy Walls, Don Larson and Kelly Chadwick could have been included in their Chevy II Nova A/FX or AWB Match Basher cars. Butch Leal and Ronnie Sox could have been included in their Plymouth A/FX cars. "Dyno" Don Nicholson, Hayden Proffitt, Jack Chrisman, and Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick could have been included in their Mercury Comet A/FX cars, which could have been produced using Hot Wheels' Comet A/FX car body casting. Three more great drivers in great A/FX cars that could have been added to this collection are, Gas Ronda in the Ford SOHC 427 Mustang Fastback A/FX car, Hayden Proffitt in the wild 427 Corvair Monza A/FX car, and Hayden Proffitt in the Grant Rebel SST AMC A/FX car.I'll stop at this point without going into some exciting AA/AF and Super Stock class drivers and cars that would have been outstanding additions to the "Drag Strip Demons" collection from Hot Wheels.
