The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World

I like history, but.......
Sometimes drones on a bit. LOTS of information that is told quickly and without enough visual stimulation to make it enjoyable. The man knows his stuff but is rather boring to listen to and watch. Still-----I hated history in school but find I love it immensely as an adult if it's handled right. If more historians were better stay-tellers they would captivate more students----young and old.

If you love history, you will find this course OUTSTANDING.
What an excellent course! It's not glitzy, but the professor is outstanding, personable, and clearly not only an extremely knowledgeable teacher, but who also teaches with a sense of humor. One of the best purchases I've made through Amazon.

The Other Side of History is Fascinating
Usually one only hears about famous people of the past. This is very refreshing...and fun for ordinary people to learn about"ordinary"people in history! Dr. Garland's details are fascinating and he's a very witty and entertaining speaker as we'll!

History from those we usually don't hear from; women, slaves and the have-nots
Garland is an engaging lecturer and he speaks for those that we don't usually hear from and from whom we have very little data: slaves, women, the non-privileged. The bizarre excesses of the rich compete with the horrors visited on the poorest (a slave thrown to eels if memory serves). I'm one of those who believes that human nature doesn't change, just circumstances. Yet in giving voice to the voiceless of history, we benefit. As fascinating as looking at the baubles and practices of rulers and the privileged, I believe it is how we treat our poorest, our handicapped, our less privileged members of our culture.
