There are some really great books that have recently come out on this topic of photography and violence--Susie Linfield's Cruel Radiance (2010), Margaret Olin's Touching Photographs (2012), and Sliwinski Human Rights in Camera (2011). Unfortunately this collection of essays is not in same league as these other more scholarly and original books. Starting with the introduction to the collection there is no clear articulation of atrocity or photography of atrocity. In the essays themselves a lot of the issues covered very carefully and intelligently in the other three books are dealt with in a pedestrian and uninteresting way.
