Solid recommendations for memorable road trips
My wife and I enjoy taking long vacations where we fly to a region, spend 2 weeks putting 2000 miles on the rental car and hiking to every possible scenic point, then going home to collapse at work. We especially love finding the out-of-the-way gems that aren't crowded. This book is tailored for just that! We had already been to a few of the drives suggested and I am happy to say that the recommendations it makes are exactly what we enjoyed most about those places. I'm looking forward to trying more of the trips.

This book is nice and offers a lot of info and ideas for drives, however, I wished they would mention if a certain drive is in a national park that requires payment like the skyline drive in VA. For 5 people in a car this was a $65 surprise ....

Inspiring but need more images
If Nat Geo publishes regarding nature and exploring, I would always treat it as authority. I pay attention to imgaes more than words- my suggestion would be to have more images (Nat Geo is obviously the leader of nature and outdoor photography). Other than that, the book creates a sense of wanderlust because you know that there are these roads not far from you which are so very scenic. Makes you wish you lived all over the country and travelled more.

I would love this if it covered all of the scenic highways instead of just a sampling. It is definitely better than nothing and nice as far as it goes.

Most beautiful roads never travelled
Great guide to the more beautiful roads in the country, which are often the ones least travelled. I've travelled a few and they are truly special. Recommend to anyone who is a fan of road trips. My only critique is that the book is a little hard to keep open and the directions could be a little clearer. Great companion to the America's Byways website.

Great book for your travels
Add this book to your Nat Geo guide to National Parks and also State Parks, and you are set to have an adventure!!! Really helps in planning a trip. I plan to give it to each of my adult children, too. When you go into new territory you don't know the best places to see, and this guide helps to give you ideas. Most recently we used it on a trip from Niagara Falls across New York and through the Adirondacks. It was great!!!!

Note that the map by the same name is a lot less useful.
Very helpful guide - used it extensively on a recent car trip across the SE. Note that the map by the same name is a lot less useful.

Great planning guide in our trilogy
My husband and I are approaching retirement, wanting to hit the road and see what we have only dreamed about. I ordered this book and 2 others: NG Guide to National Parks of the US and Michael Oswald's "Your Guide to National Parks" to get the nitty-gritty for planning our adventures. With these 3 guides, we feel confident we can plan where to go and what to see while still allowing the unforeseen to occur, and yet, being prepared.

Holiday inspiration!
This is my first National Geographic book and I am so pleased that I bought this.We had recently been discussing a road trip to America and this book looks ideal for armchair planning for holidays. The routes contain mileage and time frames as well as good places to visit. The level of detail may be a little light for the actual trip but have inspired me for our next holiday!

Useful planning book
Useful book for planning a touring holiday by car in the USA. The scenic drives in each area of the US are described and the things to visit covered too. It won't replace "proper" maps but they usually don't tell you about the more out-of-the-way places to go to.

Dream Roadtrips
Ideal if you are planning a driving holiday in US. It describes both the route, and interesting side trips, on scenic roads in every American state. Of necessity it has a lot of info, and some stunning photos are rather small, but well worth the price.

Excellent guide
I love any book which records scenic roads. We do a lot of road trips and are always looking for the most scenic routes. This book has a collection of the very best and we have used it extensively. Is their one for Europe?

Website offline
Hier wird zum Beispiel keine Landschaft gezeigt, sondern ein See mit Goldfischen.by-the-way: the book is in english.
