Best In Class
The Porter Cable 890 series router is the obvious choice in the 1 3/4 - 2 1/2 HP fixed/plunge category. No other router combos offer so many features. The plunge base is ergonomically designed. Soft start really comes in handy here, making any handheld operation much easier. Dust Collection through the base works very well and catchs 95% of all dust. The design of the unit allows for maximum visibility from various angles. You can set three different plunge depths and swith between them in seconds, greatly reducing the number of set ups needed to perform multiple routes on a project while increasing accuracy and consistency. The fixed base is functional and well machined. I've made several extra base plates for my router (a surfacing plate, a fractioning plate, a circle cutter, and most importantly for the fixed base is the router table plate). I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to adjust the router depth from the top of my router table. I don't have to crane my arm around to get at a lift. I can watch the bit and make micro-adjustments to the depth with simple turn of the depth adjuster wrench. The unit switches between bases with ease and locks in securely. One hand bit changes are a snap and can be perform in seconds, even in my router table. The 890 series router also kicks up the amprage when the router gets bogged down, so it maintains desired RPMS during the heaviest of workloads. What's more, the router is extremely quiet (the quietest I've ever heard of any kind).Getting a new router made me remember how versatile the tool is. If you're going to make new base plates the base uses three 10-24 screws that can be bought for pennies at your local hardware store. Making base plates isn't rocket science but it requires precision and can open up a world of possibilities for your router and woodworking projects.I did extensive research before purchasing my 895, it is quite simply the top of the line. Makita and Bosch offer the only real competition, they both make very nice combos in their own right, but the PC is superior. You'll have no regrets.

Great router package
I purchased this a few months ago (2016), a replacement for the Porter Cable 693 package I have used since 2001. This is an excellent router package. The old router package was not variable speed, the motor had a poor fit in the bases, no soft start, was not user friendly and was lacking the router lift adjustment. The new 895PK motor and bases fit very well, are easy to install and remove. The power switch is in a better position for use in a router table - you can reach under and slap the bottom of the router to shut it off. The router adjustment for the fixed base is easy to use and the pre-drilled holes lined up perfectly on the Woodpecker table insert I have been using with the old 693. I have used with large and small diameter bits. I had great results with a large diameter raised panel bit in hard and brittle white oak - being able to set rpm is a must for these larger bits. The plunge router base is also a huge improvement over the 693 - it works smoothly and the vacuum attachment, built-in to the base, was well thought out. I agree with other folks that have reviewed that you should use two wrenches to tighten/loosen the collet; only one is provided so you will need to buy one if you don't have something suitable on hand. I had wrenches for the old 693, they fit the 895PK, so I had the extra one needed. This is an excellent package at a very competitive price.

Porter Cable 895pk plunge router set
This is a Cadillac so far folks. Very well made tool. The soft start motor is great. Very smooth. Has plenty of power for hardwoods. The plunge action is smooth. Amazingly the vacuum tube and clear guard on the body are absolutely top notch. There is a slight drawback to the design of the collet that holds the bit in both in the 1/2” and 1/4”. The collets have too much metal sticking by the snap ring that is external next to where the router chucks the bit. This extra 1/8” of metal bottoms out if your using a bushing on the bit when making say mortise and tenon cuts in a guide bushingand that’s not good. Because of this the router bit shank has to be pulled out further than you might normally do. This isn’t too terrible but worth a mention. I would still highly recommend and buy again in spite of that. Really superior tool if u like Porter Cable!
