Great for Use with an Alcohol Stove
The Stove Tamer Heat Diffuser is a solid plate of non-ferrous metal (probably aluminum) that effectively increases the thickness of the bottom of your pan - which slows and more evenly distributes heat. It measures 6 x 7 inches, is a good 1/16 inches thick, and weights 4.1 ounces.I use the Stove Tamer Heat Diffuser to make the simmer ring on my Trangia Spirit Burner with Screwcap more efficient for slow-to medium cooking. (My cooking setup is a Trangia alcohol burner placed inside a Sterno Single Burner Folding Stove - 50002. That is to say, the alcohol burner is placed on top of an empty-and-inverted small tuna can in the stove's wire-frame Sterno cradle. This provides a stable base for the burner and sets the flame at an efficient height.) The heat diffuser is placed on top of the Sterno stove with the Trangia burning, and the cooking pan is placed on top of the diffuser. It takes a few minutes for the energy to build up because of the added thickness, but you get this energy back by being able to cook for a few minutes after the flame goes out. When the temperature is where I want it for cooking, I drop the simmer ring onto the Trangia. For cooking eggs, I use about a 1/2 inch simmer ring opening. This diffuser helps to spread the heat of the narrow flame evenly across the bottom of the pan and keeps the temperature relatively constant.

Hangs in Locker/easy to use
I bought this because my single burner camp stove had too large a center opening for my espresso pot. Now, I'm all set. Also, the little burner was difficult to adjust the flame down far enough to not scorch things. This does that well. It's about 1/8" thick and the hole at the top (see photo at top of page) fits a screw head. I added one screw to the inside of my locker door and two more lower. The lower pair hold the metal off the teak locker door so nothing will get overheated should the Stove Tamer be put away hot.I've not had to do that though I did try and it's not terribly difficult. A pair of pliers and I easily slipped that hole over the pan head screw. Voila: put away and such that even in a seaway it will stay put. That's important on a boat. When I installed the larger 3.1 cubic foot (the smallest two-door model available) by Haier I had to remove my stove. Now I'm using a single camping stove and with the Stove Tamer I'm very pleased. It's easy to cook with. I'm glad I bought it. Oh, and it's not flimsy.

Please note if using a camping stove
I tried using this on an isopropane camping stove. The stove was on a mid-level setting preparing to warm a Dutch oven when we noticed the flame tamer deforming. It quickly melted and sagged, destroying itself as well as the stove. I don’t know the underlying reason for this, but users should note this device is *not* appropriate for use on a camping stove.

Works relatively well.
Seems to work relatively well. Could be a tad thicker and larger. The feature I like is that it is flat, so you can insert it under a large pot, eg a 9 or 10 quart pot or pan. The diffusers with the handle limit the size of the pot you can use as the diameter of the bottom of large pots impinge on where the handle attaches.

Lightweight, flat, great
Love these things, use them to tame burner so Bialetti coffee pot can work on gas stove that doesn't have low enough burner, or truly "simmer" things

Multi Use Tool
Not only is this great for low simmering pots but it works as a great quick defrosting tool. We keep ours on the stove top and one day I sat individual frozen hamburg patties on it to defrost. It worked so quickly at reducing defrost time, I decided to order another to use for this purpose. It works equally well with other frozen packs. If not sitting on a stove grate, I put it on a cooling rack so air circulates around it to assist in defrosting. Well made and a rare USA product. It works for us!

Stove Tamer did not meet my expectations.
STOVE TAMERThis product was only fare. I wanted to do tangine cooking in ceramic ware on stove top. The Stove Tamer became just as hot as the burner. It began to smell like it was burning and it was difficult to pick it up off the hot stove. It might work at lower temperatures and it was a good price and easily stored.

Perfect for backpacking stoves
i have tried to fry an egg in my Toaks TI 1600 ml lid since I bought into TI cookware, always has way too many hot spots with every stove I try. The stove tamer worked with my Tangia burner, msr pocket rocket and my solo stove and allowed my to fry the perfect egg on all three. Also cooked bannock in the lid using the Tangia burner with no burning or sticking. The stove tamer should be in everyone's pack if you want to really cook and not just boil water in your TI cookware. I made the hole larger so that I can lift the tamer off the stove using the hook on my TI spork as the tamer is really hot for quite a while after cooking on it and with the Tangia the tamer has to be removed to put out the flame. The 4.1 oz is not a large amount of weight considering I can actually cook and not just boil water for freeze dried meals.
