Fundamentals of Photography: The Essential Handbook for Both Digital and Film Cameras Hardcover – Deckle Edge, November 25, 2008

This is a small encyclopaedia of photography and an excellent reference resource. You can read this and discover topics you want to learn more about then go looking for other sources specific to those topics if you need to. Mr. Ang does not go into great depth on any subject (so far, have not read the whole book yet) but subjects are concise and well flushed out. It is a great intro for those who don't know too much about photography and want to know everything, and a resource refresher for those who know a great deal. My friend and I both own copies and are awed by how much information is packed between the covers. It is also one of the most handsome softcover books I have seen in very long time, well constructed.

Whether you're just getting started with photography/DSLRs or you're experienced, but never fully understood the ins and outs, this is a wonderful book. It's interesting to read from cover to cover, but probably most useful to have on hand as a reference. It reaches a nice medium between technical information ( where a setting is on a camera) and practical information while staying informative and visually stimulating w/ it's full-color pages.

I bought this book from Amazon.com , and it is every thing I knew it would be. I had already checked it out from the library, but I needed a copy of my own. I'm about halfway through the book, and two things about it really impress me: 1) Ang's ability to present the information in ways that even I can easily understand, and 2) his writing style makes it a pleasure--even from a retired college writing teacher--to read.

The book has a great deal of excellent information.I reduced my rating one star due to the fact that I tried to order the hardcover version twice from amazon, but as you can see in the photo - they sent a softcover both times.

The book is wonderful, but do not buy it used. About 6 of the images in the book were blacked out and/or covered with paper for some reason. I am going to donate it and buy it new. This is a very technical book, and I have all of my students buy it. It is excellent material to use teach a basic photography class.

Explains things in a USA TODAY-esque way hitting the high points and helping you understand photography concepts and technology. Some of the type is small, so get out the glasses if you need them. I think a must to have in your photography library.

Page by page this book is a mess. It lays things out well sure but clearly didn't get a real editor to review before publication. There's sentences not ending right. Sections with an intro that mention A, B, C then actually go on to talk about X, Y, Z. Maybe my copy is a misprint or botched/fake copy? Either way this is NOT a quality book.
