The hook itself is spring-loaded so it snaps closes automatically after you connect it to the collar. There's also a small metal part that slides up and prevents the collar from ever disconnected until you slide it down. Its not necessary, the hook is strong, but its a piece of mind thing if your dog pulls a lot or is very large.

The clip is metal and locks. I like this leash and use it every day. It is a quality product and would purchase it again.

It is helpful in areas with lights or four way stops to have better control over the dog/keep them close to you without having to bunch up the Leash.

The leash is made from ballistic nylon which greatly reduces any incident of fraying, tearing, or ripping - even if occasionally chewed on by the dog. The leash works well for almost any breed of dog and it was designed specifically for medium to extra-large dogs.
