Q: Is the ball head on this 20mm ball mount

Can't measure the ball diameter because you can't un-thread the arm screw completely off.

Q: Can this clamp to a flat surface or must it be a rod?

Yes and no. Super clamps are designed to clamp to photo/video pole systems, which are tubes. Notice the pincer-type jaws? That’s so the curvature of the clamp’s surface can have more contact —grip— with a pole’s surface. This is very much like a thumb and forefinger of the human hand. To make a super clamp —any super clamp— fit a flat surface the gap in the “elbows” of the clamp’s jaws must be made flat. Otherwise only the tips of the jaws —the pincers— will make contact and the clamp will pinch the material it is affixed to. To make a super clamp flat requires a fitted nylon, plastic, hard rubber, wood or metal spacer. When the clamp is tightened the force will transfer through the entire now-flat contact area to hold to the flat object. You can use the clamp “as is” to pinch a flat surface, but you risk an insecure clamping, crushing the object clamped, and marring the surface of the object clamped. I hope this helps!

Q: What size phone will this fit? I couldn't find the maximum opening dimension of the phone adapter.

Sturdy, well made clamp

Every part is made of metal and will undoubtedly outlast similar clamps made mainly from plastic. I can't imagine any part of it will break.The build quality is excellent and I'm delighted with it.

Poor quality

This product broke after the 4th time using on my bike, as you can see in the picture the metal part which connects to the mount broke meaning my Camera flying off and damaging my camera.You can't trust using this mount if you using on a bike.
