I am not sure, we have put two mattress's on top of the slats and it is just so comfortable, and really good value for the money, I first saw this bed for £1,500.00, hope this answer helps !!!

Q: Is the back of the headboard same finish as footboard, i.e. can I have it freestanding in the room?

No. The back of the headboard has all the screw holes that fix the head pad and allows the pad to be taken out for re-covering (rather like the underside of a chair with a drop-in seat) You wouldn't want the back on display. Hope that's helpful.
