Drawing with water
These water drawing mats are a cute idea that may seem a bit basic to us jaded adults, but will prove magical for very young children. This set is currently priced at £13.99 and includes a large (140x100cm) mat with a fun dinosaur theme, 3 x water pens, a selection of foam stencils, suction cups for fixing (the mat can be hung or placed on floor) and a colouring book. The idea is that, using water alone, children can draw on the blank white mat and a selection of rainbow colours will magically appear and gradually fade. This is done through nothing more than a covering of thin white fabric that, when wet, adhered to the brighter coloured stuff underneath. Disappointed as I was to discover the low-tech nature of this gimmick, I must confess that in my long career working with children, I have regularly kept them amused outdoors for surprisingly long periods of time with nothing more than a bucket of water and a paintbrush, so I can vouch that this technique does work! The water pens are a fun gadget too - unscrew the top, fill with water, and then use like a regular felt pen for more control than a brush. It’s not completely mess free - expect to do some wiping up after - but it’s otherwise a relatively contained way to explore mark-making.
