An essential book for everyone, not just those diagnosed with macular degeneration
I think this book is essential reading for everyone, not just those diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration or who know someone with this disease. Age-related macular degeneration is the most common eye disease and the number of people affected is growing, Moreover it is widely regarded in the medical professor as incurable, The authors are a doctor of optometry (Jeffrey Anshel OD) and a medical researcher (Laura Stevens M.Sci) who herself has this disease. The book is divided into four parts., Part one provides basic information on macular degeneration; part two discusses supplements that can help with this disease; part three discusses dietary factors; and part four covers lifestyle risk factors and tools you can use if you have this disease.I bought this book after being told by an ophthalmologist that I have early stage dry macular degeneration. Naturally I was very concerned but all the doctor said was, "come back and see me in six months." Instead I have taken a very pro-active approach and I found this book to be especially useful. The authors provide very valuable information not only in regards to this disease, but also for healthy living in general,. For example, they define an anti-AMD diet, provide very exact listings of supplements that are beneficial and offer other positive advice.Regardless of the condition of your eyes or your general health this book will be a valuable resource to help you live a positive and healthy life, and if you have AMD it will give you hope that you can avoid blindness and live a normAL life even with this condition,

Good reference book.
This covers, in sometimes great repetitive detail, everything you might need to know about MD, and ARMD. I am 80, with dry ARMD in both eyes. It is slowly impairing my vision. There is no known cure, but a proper diet, with exercise, may slow the progression. This book also covers most of the various supplements thought to affect MD. It is well written, and recommended for anyone whose eyesight is still good enough to read it. I think there is an audio version available, too.

A new basic
As a victim of macular degeneration and a retired nurse always interested in health education, I have to buy a new book when it comes out. Doctor Anshel gives some of the basics but tends to focus on lifestyle and diet changes---most recommended for all healthy living. He discusses dietary supplements and their value. He ends the book with how to live with the disease and that is an important factor. That said, I would recommend the book "Vision Loss-Strategies for Living with Hope and Independence" by Peggy Wolfe, edition 3 on adapting to a life with vision loss.

Good source of info
Excellent source of information. I learned a lot and even though I think the “diet” they propose is virtually impossible and mostly inedible , it is still a good book and worth buying for those of us diagnosed with AMD.

I didn't find this book as helpful as I have others...
I thought from the title that this would be a very helpful book.Unfortunately, when I started reading it it was overly technical and not really much help at all.For someone struggling with macular degeneration I'm afraid I can't really recommend this book.
