I bought the Makeblock mBot2 Rover Robotics Kit as a gift for my 10-year-old nephew, and it turned out to be so much more than just a toy—it was a weekend full of fun, learning, and unforgettable memories.The kit was well-designed and easy to follow, even for a beginner like me. We worked together to build and program the robot, and it was amazing to see his excitement as it all came to life. From assembling the parts to experimenting with coding, it was a fantastic hands-on experience that taught both of us a lot.The quality of the kit is top-notch, and the instructions were clear. Watching my nephew’s confidence grow as he figured things out was priceless. What a great kit! Well technically two kits. This is great for young and old alike as long as you have an interest in robotics and electronics. The instructions are easy enough to follow, and once done you have a functioning robot that can be tweaked, rebuilt, and made better by expanding it. Let you mind run wild and build something great.

The mBot2 is a great little robot to lear about the basics of motor control and sensors.The Rover addon seems to be a great addition with a focus on servos and a bit more hands on assembly, but it falls short for one really major design oversight. The design of the wheels are a complete failure of engineering. The free wheels make use of a single bore that rides on top of its screw, so friction between the weel and the screw result in over-tightening the screw until it locks up, or unscrewing the screw until the screw is no longer securing it to the chasis.If the designers had spent just a tiny bit more money and included proper roller or ball bearings for these wheels, this would have been a decent procuct. However, it completely falls short.The Scratch-based coding experience is great, but debugging is a pain when things go wrong. You just get a partial python exception message on the display to go off of, meaning that you need to understand how the scratch is translated into python and then help the student with the nuances of that to fix it in Scratch. The provided blocks for the game controller support are very inadequate for doing proper game controller support (eg: no events that fire when buttons go up / down, so you need to continually poll valuator state instead). These shortcomings push students to follow anti-patterns rather than learning how to properly design event loops.

The metal piece detached out of the box and can't be screwed back on, it keeps falling off. Contact customer service, every message takes a day or two to respond and every response is asking for extra small other details. Last message asking about video proof. Been a week and nothing's solved. It sounds like on purpose to make customer give up which I do.

I love that this includes two robots with different "skills" so you learn different techniques and different ways to solve problems. To control these you use a classic block development type system where you drag functions onto a program field and hook the blocks up to each other. This is a great way to teach basic logic flow. Once you outgrow the block programming system you can switch to Python, a real programming language.
