Sturmey Archer Freewheel single speed. So far so good.
So far so good. Put about 100 miles on a ‘76 Schwinn Varsity single speed conversion.Chain line was easy to maintain by switching sides with the hub spacers & adding about 12mm on the drive side. I used the existing small chainring, ( easily removed the larger chain ring & was able to utilize the original crankset) The freewheel is quiet, and does not skip. (So far) It does not weigh much, about 1/3 of the original 5 speed freewheel.After all the modifications the old Varsity went from 41lbs to 31 lbs. .I can easily switch back to original 10 SPD.One thing that surprised me is that this “sturmey Archer” freewheel is made in China.I bought this one because I mistakenly believed that SA were still made in Great Britain.

Awesome value!
This is a great freewheel for the money. Dicta’s are complete trash and should be avoided. The quality of the Sturmey Archer far surpasses Dicta’s and I dare say rivals other extremely expensive options. One thing to keep in mind however, the threaded portion does not run all the way through which could effect your chainline ever so slightly. Otherwise, can’t recommend these enough, they are brilliant!
