Character Above All: Ten Presidents from FDR to George Bush Hardcover – February 1, 1996

Everybody says they can't put it down. So it took a month for me to get to read it myself.

Having read and appreciated the depth and breadth of many of these various authors in their full-length biographies of these Presidents, it was intriguing how they characterized the character of "their" Presidents, and what support and pieces of information they drew from the full-length biographies to make their assertions. Fascinating, easy to read, and very glad to add to my bookshelf.If I have any complaint, it's that the sticker on it with the shelf code, etc threatened to tear the paper of the book when I tried to peel it off. .

I love anything Doris Kearns Goodwin writes. Her historical books are outstanding, tell a story to let you understand the person, their personality, and the complete facts of their life in such an enjoyable format. I equal her with David McCullough. We have seen so little character in our politicians today but those in the past were serving the People as their goal. Take a look at all of the books by Goodwin. I have read all of them and enjoyed every one although some are long it was worth the read. Understanding of the man, the times, and issues being faced all put into context.

Great read. There were a couple of Presidents that the authors seemed to struggle to convey anything worthy of someone who has the stature of "President." FDR, Truman, and Reagan were written in an exemplary and insightful way. Two of those authors are Pulitzer Prize winners for their larger work. The writers who weren't as good certainly had less inspiring subjects, however those presidents/chapters served to loft the legendary presidents to greater heights by contrast. Again, a great read.

Great book on 10 U.S. Presidents written by 10 different authors. I found the brief history on Jimmy Carter to be somewhat nauseating and not as objective as it should have been. The presidential histories written by Doris Kearns Goodwin, David McCullough and Peggy Noonan alone are worth the price of the book. This is a quick read because of the well written articles.

This book is a wonderful glimpse of our presidents by showing not only the strengths but also their human weaknesses. The quick delivery was unbelievable. I really appreciate it.

I always highly recommend any book by Doris Kearns Goodwin, and am anxiously awaiting what comes next.
