Good films, rubbish packaging
Great films, anyway. I grew up with Nicholas Hammond's Spider-Man, which was fun to watch at the age of six, but the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man was the first time I felt the character was done justice. It's a heartfelt, honest film. There's no postmodern, self-aware snark, which was prevalent at the time in the business and is horribly prevalent these days. Willem Dafoe is a great Norman Osborn, but severely restricted by turning the Green Goblin costume into a bizarre battle armour that looks better suited to a Power Rangers episode. Spider-Man 2 is a great sequel, building on what went before and featuring a terrific turn by Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus. Spider-Man 3 is the shaky film: it fumbles the first appearance of Venom and Sandman is caught up in a bizarre retcon of Uncle Ben's death. Add Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy, who barely resembles the iconic comicbook character, and another Green Goblin and it's all a bit congested! Spider-Man 3 wasn't the best film, but it wasn't series-killing awful either. There was a good deal of disappointment and bemusement when Sony abandoned the series. Rather than continue the series with a new director and new actor, we got the dreaded reboot. The two Amazing Spider-Man films get a lot of flack, but Andrew Garfield gives a likeable, different take on Peter and there's a great onscreen chemistry between Peter and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. Trouble is, they both look too old for high school and the reboot opts to retell the origin story less than a decade after Tobey's first film. They should have moved Peter well into his mid-20s trying to make a living as a photographer. This series of films was abandoned after Spider-Man 2 following a series of crises at Sony. Everyone involved deserved better treatment as Marc Webb's direction was decent, performances were all excellent. At least the five films are getting some sort of closure in the latest Spider-Man film.I wanted to get hold of these films, particularly Tobey's trilogy, in some reasonable packaging and this set of five discs seemed to be the easiest option. What is borderline criminal is the way they're packaged. The two Amazing Spider-Man films are in a two-disc Amaray case, but each of the original trilogy films is in an individual case. If the cases had the original film poster art, that might just about be excusable, but with appalling bright blue covers and a single number to indicate the film, it's unforgivable. You can fit up to six discs in a case the size of an average Amaray. Certainly three discs could have fitted in one case. To top it off, the disc cases are packaged in a throway cardboard box that is difficult to open without creasing up. The design on the box is nice. A pity it couldn't have been used for a nice tidy case that doesn't take up an inordinate amount of shelf space.Very good films, rubbish packaging!
