Great
A significant upgrade from my old canister filter that constantly got clogged.Easy to change the cartridges and relatively quiet operation. The cradle that the filter box sits in is a bit fiddly to use and I found it a a bit of a faff to get it to click into place.Another feature that would have been handy that was on my old fluval filter is a flow meter...essentially a small bit of plastic that sinks down into the filter when it starts to get clogged. There is no real way to tell if this filter is losing circulation if you aren't using the venturi valve.Minor complaints. I would recommend this filter.

Effortless maintenance
Had this over 2 years now, having had just about every filter out there. It's very very quiet (and I'm very picky on noise levels) and simply brilliant at filtering. Cannot fault it, if it broke today I'd have a replacement U3 tomorrow.

Quiet and effective water filtration system
I have a 120L tank which was served by Fluval U2 originally. It was a good filter but of course not having the the capacity to cope with the size of the tank, hence I upgraded to Fluval U4. I have always been a fan of the Fluval product though pricey at times. However, I need a reliable filter which not only does the job well but last longer than the ones I had.Build:As one would expect from Fluval, the design of their product has always been at the forefront of water filtration system. U4 is no exception. The layout is well thought through with large grilled surface on both sides drawing large area of water into the filter. The top hinged cover is not detachable so you will need to be very careful not to snap it during maintenance.Performance:It is very quiet considering the fact that this water pump has the capability of circulating a tank up to 120L. There is an option to airate the tank - an additional feature which you may consider instead of having separate noisier air pump in the tank. You would expect it to begin cleaning the water within minutes of the operation. The water jet does not blast the plants nearby. The fish loves it especially when swimming against the jet.Maintenance:The filter media is very easy to replace and you can get them quite easily from online stores or even your local pet shops. Prices vary from one to another. From experience, I do not always follow the recommended media replacement of the charcoal filter and the foam. However, it does depend on the fish population and how often you change the water. I do usually clean the filter every 2 weeks, so this does extend the life expectancy of the media. On cautious note, it can be a bit awkward when opening the top cover of the main compartment even when it is unclipped from the sucker bracket. The pump is sitting at the bottom of the filter which is housed in a separated compartment. This is fully detachable from the main unit for cleaning. Conclusion:Apart from the expensive replacement media (hence 4 Stars), it is a unit which you can rely on in terms of quality, build and performance. I have not regretted getting it and in fact, I am very happy with it.

Powerful Underwater Filter
The Fluval U3 Underwater Filter 800LPH the 3rd one I've had. The first was a U2 and it lasted for years, ran really well and was very quiet. The second was a U3 like this one, but I brought it from Ebay second hand and well, I won't be doing that again. After 2 months it just stopped working, even with a change of fuse. My fault entirely! So, I bought this one as it was a decent price for filters suitable for aquariums 90 - 150 litres in size. At the time of writing it's on offer, so a big saving. This filter has a system where you can fix it into the tank and when the carbon cartridges, sponge filters and granules need changing you just tilt, open the lid and remove the cases they are in, so you don't have to take out the whole thing each time. It's a good system and works very well to keep my large tank clean. In addition, I found the filter easy to install on the side of our tank, with the wires hanging around the back where it is plugged into the wall on the right. So it's got a fairly long lead to be able to do this. I can also set this for a water flow of powerful surface agitation or reduce it to a much gentler flow for a planted tank, which my fish tend to prefer anyway. The only problem I have is that is it not as quiet as I expected. I guess I must have been lucky before, but this definitely seems louder to me. I also have a smaller AquaOne filter in the same tank. It was an older one I put in to save the fish when my other filter broke down, and to be honest the AquaOne is much quieter. But this may be just because it is a smaller filter.I'm no expert fish keeper, but for the price, and a U3 is quite a large filter, I still believe this is a good choice. It definitely keeps the tank clean and my fish happy.
