Jigo,the answers to your two questions are: "Both" and "Yes" & "no". The clock can be battery powered only, meaning the face display of time, seconds and date, etc. is constantly shown but NOT backlit, unless the snooze/light bar on the top of the clock is pushed, which will turn on the face display back light for a few seconds, so you can read it in the dark. Using only the batteries for power, the lamp in the projection tube which causes the time to be projected on the wall or ceiling is also off, unless the snooze/light is pushed, which will not only light the face display back light for a few seconds but also light the lamp in the projection tube for a few seconds, which will allow the time to be displayed on the wall or ceiling for the same few seconds. However, if you also use the included AC power supply, the projection tube lamp will remain constantly on and the red projected time display will always be seen on the wall or ceiling, if the room is dark enough. However, the face display back light will still not come on until the snooze/light button is pushed and will still only stay on for a few seconds. I just tested snoozing it at 16 times (136 minutes since the alarm went off) and it is still snoozing.

I wear glasses as well, I cannot see the display at all, however I have no trouble with the projection.. As far as size, I have no way to give you a reference

Yes, presuming that the batteries are in and working. When the electrical power goes off, the ceiling projection light goes off but the clock, face illumination and alarm still work.
