Great quantity for the price
We used it in a glass jar, and like a previous reviewer did, we had to clean (wash) the product a few times with tap water to get clear water which works well with all magnets. Then we made magnetic slime (with blue food coloring). It didn't work with the magnetic wands, but we used stronger stone magnetics which was fun and entertaining for my boys. I will update in a few days see to of either projects rust.

These Iron Filings are Dirty
I purchased these iron filings to make a 3D magnetic flux viewer. I had to jump through some hoops to make it work. The first one is these filings are dirty. I had to clean the filings with mineral spirits. It made all the difference. See the photo of dirty versus clean fluid. I purchased mineral oil (food grade) but it was too thick. Thinning the oil with mineral spirits did the trick. It's about 60% oil and 40% spirits. Don't use water, the filings will rust almost immediately. If you don't want to go through the hassle of making your own viewer just buy one of the ready made viewers. Amazon has several. Two dimensional viewers don't show the whole picture. Sprinkling filings on paper covering a magnet is messy. Strong magnets will hold on to the filings making it tough to remove the magnet. Once you get filings on a magnet they are nearly impossible to get off. Hence making or buying a three dimensional viewer.Introducing magnets and how they work to children at about eight or nine years old will spark an interest in science for life. Given that we are leaving fossil fuel behind, understanding how electricity is made and manipulated presents future careers for innovative minds. Electricity is made with magnets and copper wire. Learning how that works will be a necessity for engineers of the future as the internal combustion engine fades into history.Another review pointed out the weight advertised is more than what is shipped. I weighed the unopened bottle and it is one ounce short, 11 oz. not 12oz. I'm not sure 12 ounces will fit in the container. It's not that big a deal as it only took two ounces of filings to make the viewer.
