Captain America

Great to have this new Marvel Series on it's modern Superheroes. I have bought a few copies for some obsessed Spiderman Fans and other Marvel comic Fans. Very much enjoyed the introductions and preface too.

This penguin edition has many insights as to the early development of this costumed character. It appears that before the USA was officially in the 2nd world war the first issue of Captain America hit the news stands with the good captain punching Adolf Hitler. even so, the early issues were about fifth columnists infiltrating the USA and Captain America and his young aid Bucky doing something about it. The original shield was the type that might have been carried by a medieval knight. The round shield came later as did a better mask. The Red Skull developed over time as seen in this collection. He was far more sinister in the 1960s when readers learned that he had been tutored in evil by Hitler personally. There's art by Jack Kirby that became more dynamic and powerful.
