Real deal but extremely pricey
Being born and raised in Switzerland, I can attest of the authenticity of the product - the price, however isn't authentic by any means - even when compared against Swiss prices ! A 500 g piece like this at home wouldn't exceed 15$; so the extra 25$ I paid doesn't justify the extra cost incurred by shipping. It is okay to make a profit, but up to certain point. Amazon should try to impose price checks & limits on intl items like these.

A VERY expensive disappointment!
Disappointing and frustrated, not only because it is just so utterly difficult to get real quality and specifically Swissmade cheeses in the US, and that's not just because it's hard to find for sales, but because of how it's being handled after it has been imported, how it is stored once it is in the US. I know with absolute certainty that no Swiss would ever ship such low quality Gruyere cheese into the US, and am even more certain that it came through customs with its rind intact. This purchase let me down in quality for sure and quite possibly in it's authenticity.I was so thrilled to find it on Amazon. So I bought two lbs of Gruyere to be served during the upcoming holidays. To my surprise it also happened to be on sale. The discount/reduced price however does not make up for it's poor quality! At the very least you could have listed the possibility of questionable quality as the reason for the discount. Besides, didn't you taste this cheese before selling it? Do you yourself actually know what it's supposed to taste like? But this purchase of Gruyere cheese is what now causes me such disappointment! It is incredibly dry, and someone had cut/removed its rind! Why would anyone cut off the rind? Incredibly dry! What happened to it's fat? How long had the seller been keeping this cheese, and in most likely less than ideal storage? Is that why you are selling it for a reduced price? And why was the rind remove? Its Rind had been removed! Why would anyone in the business of selling and/or importing cheese remove its rind? The rind is not just for show, it protects the cheese and keeps it from drying out! And - it is indisputable proof of its authenticity! The rind is proof of its origin and maker, both printed on its rind, and marked with the stamp of product of Switzerland, with the red crossbow. So, what possessed the seller to cut off this valuable rind? What were you trying to hide? Put this together with poor storage, which by itself caused the cheese to lose fat and flavor, drying it out. Cheese demands care and attention, to be stored properly, and it needs that rind to keep its moisture, its flavor, its fat and its quality and as proof of authenticity.Age is not so much of an issue with cheese re its quality, it however becomes an issue if it is not stored properly, causing loss of flavor, loss of valuable fats, moisture and causing it to dry out. I'm certain that this cheese was not shipped to the seller in this condition. Judging by its quality, maybe this cheese has been changing 'stations' a few times before being shipped to me?Real good quality Gruyere cheese has a very distinct aroma and flavor, it is rassig/sassy, and smells just how it tastes, and when stored correctly it has a really good amount of much needed fats. Why on earth would the seller remove the rind though? Stupid even if it was removed just before shipping. Rind is removed by the consumer not by the seller! Origin, storage, rinds, and packing all matter and is why it is so expensive.I'm Swiss born and raised in Switzerland, so I'm not just blowing dust, I grew up eating cheeses of every type and flavor. We often visited cheese makers all over Switzerland, some school trips to teach, definitely learning from the makers, in the making of cheeses of every kind. I grew up appreciating all kinds of cheese and learning from tasting and watching it being made.. And oh! did I mention my father's expertise in fondue making? Yum!Be aware that Gruyere, like many cheeses, needs to be rested at room temperature long enough to allow for full flavors and aroma to come to the surface, come to full bloom, before serving. This is true even for this poor quality Gruyere cheese, and is what I did, but it did not recover its full body as it should have. This purchase never recovered its expected normal taste, nor its quality. This is, as I said, a huge disappointment and a very expensive loss for me, and not just to my wallet either. I had plans that this cheese would make a grand entrance, as it was tradition in our family, on Christmas and New Years Eve! But instead it is making me having to make a call to Amazon this evening and see if there is a way to make this right. But a call/note from the seller would be even better.I wouldn't recommend you spending your money for your own disappointment. I read a review from one customer who complained about her order of this cheese had too much fat. Most likely shipped in hot weather, definitely not a good time of year for any cheese shipments. When I unpacked my package, that review came to mind, and I wished that I had gotten some of that fat. Neither is good for cheese, poor storage or shipping in hot weather. Once the fat escaped the cheese it will not be re-absorbed, and results in the same outcome, a dry and rather tasteless, but expensive piece of Gruyere cheese.
