I don't know. I returned it because it is not organic as stated.

I shampoo right away and leave on while I finish showering, then rinse. So only about 5 minutes.

Q: Excuse my ignorance, about what color is chestnut brown? I have medium brown hair with some reddish highlights. How would this affect my color?

This is a very very dark brown. I use it to cover my gray, and I would prefer a medium brown or even a light brown, but this product only comes in brown or black. So I use the brown color. The longer I leave it on Before rinsing, the darker it gets. Each time I wash my hair it does tend to get a little lighter, so by the time I wash my hair three or four times it is a nice medium brown color.
