Actually soft Basswood
I like others had just about give up trying to source soft Basswood or Limewood or whatever. Tired of numb fingers and thumbs trying to carve stone like wood. So glad have took a punt. This wood is what I expect carving wood to be like. So I'm happy to recommend this for hand carving.

Could be so much better
This is supposed to be quality basswood, well, it isn't or at least this batch wasn't. The wood is very hard to carve (Using a freshly stropped Drake knife) and a couple of the pieces are very heavily grained.Not what I would expect from Beavercraft or Amazon.I've been woodcarving for a number of years and I would say that this is certainly not suitable for someone just starting out.Amazon & Beavercraft need to up their game and improve the quality checks.Update: The seller reached out to me after my review and assured me that the quality control is very important to them. A replacement product has been dispatched which is very good to see especially nowadays when so many companies are going for profit over service.I have added stars purely because of the customer service.

Finding decent wood just lying around in the UK for carving can be tricky so this is great for practicing my whittling. Arrived quickly. Nice wood to work with and I’m happy with the end results

Very hard basswood
The 1x1" pieces are reasonably soft and easy to carve but the 2x2" pieces are very hard and nothing like the butter soft basswood you see carvers using on Youtube. It seems that European basswood is much harder than the wood available in the USA.
