Have you ever fallen in love with a tool?
The media could not be loaded. This tool is a work of art, a thing of beauty. For the price of a weeks groceries, you can start sculpting styrofoam into anything you can imagine. It cuts through thick foam like butter, no, more like air. Even your most sensitive gesture is reflected in the cut. Absolutely effortless styrofoam sculpting. It makes a peculiar whine while running, but wearing earplugs made it tolerable and I quickly got used to it. Also, you will need to wear a good organic vapour mask while cutting the styrofoam, but hopefully you already knew that. This is the most wonderful tool I own now. God bless the geniuses who invented it, seriously.

Easy set up; 5 wires; needs separately purchased Proxxon power supply
Solid design, comes with 5 wires; easy to set up and get working but needs separately purchased Proxxon power supply. There is zero issue getting the Wires into the clamps as there is plenty of room as per the pictures. Anyone who had issues with mounting the wires was using custom wires or had a defective or modified unit. Both top and bottoms side clamps shown have enough room for wires 2x the diameter.

Broke after using once. Thank you amazon for your generous return policy. I am using the $19.99 wand type styrofoam cutter and it's working beautifully. This is not worth the big bucks you have to spend on it and the transformer.

Poor Purchase Decision!
Very disappointing for an expensive tool that requires a separate power supply that's also pricey. I purchased the Proxxon Cutter and Transformer as a gift for my wife, since she needed to cut a lot of Styrofoam for her Department 56 display. Imagine how thrilled she was to discover that her shiny new tool couldn't be used without modification because it was impossible to install a piece of the supplied cutting wire in the upper clamping device without modifying the clamping washer that's secured to the upper arm with a knurled screw.Yes; that's right. The clamping washer at the upper attachment point for the cutting wire was too thick to accommodate the cutting wire without significant modification. The threads on the knurled screw were too short to engage the base component of the adjustable arm when a piece of cutting wire was placed between the clamping washer and the base component of the adjustable arm.Fortunately, I was able to remove about a third of the clamping washer's thickness to permit it to be used to attach a cutting wire without stripping out the threads in the mounting base that's attached to the adjustable arm. Based on the warranty information in the accompanying instructions, my only other recourse would have been to return the cutting device to the retailer for replacement or a refund. Since that would have delayed my wife's project, unnecessarily, it was a less attractive solution to the problem. After making the needed modification, I can advise that my wife is happy with the way the tool performs, so far, but I'm a bit concerned about whether the tool will have a better operating life than the cheaper (throw away) tools that my wife has previously used to cut Styrofoam. I wouldn't purchase this tool, again, unless I was sure that Proxxon had resolved the poor design/quality control issue that permitted a device that couldn't be used without modification to be shipped to a customer in another country. More important, perhaps, I won't be purchasing another (even more expensive) Proxxon tool because of my unfortunate experience with this one.

100% pleased with my purchase!
I'd been looking to buy a hot-wire foam cutter for some time. Mainly I wanted to cut out outlines in foam to store tools, firearms, etc, & bviously I wanted one that worked well & for a decent price. Of the few I found on amazon, this Proxxon sounded pretty good but 1-2 bad reviews made me skeptical. Right out of the box, I found that it was EXACTLY what I was looking for! I 1st used it on some very light shipping-type foam & it worked great. Once the on button (trigger) is pulled, it takes about 5-10sec for it to reach full temp & then it slices right into the material. As long as you pay attention to the speed of the cut (by felt resistance to cutting) it makes a smooth, continuous cut. It's set up to easily remove 1 end of the wire so you can insert the wire into the center of the foam, re-fasten the wire, & make a cut from the inside of the foam. I also tried it on some VERY thick & heavy automotive grade insulating foam, & it did cut through it, but slowly. Although I only needed to make straight cuts, you can shape the wire to whatever contour you want & cut like so. Anyway, pay no attention to any bad review on this tool. I couldn't be happier with my purchase! There's no doubt it's well worth the cost. But don't forget, you DO have to buy the transformer from Proxxon to run this. Even with that added cost, I'd buy it again!!!

Nice design. Plenty of power.
I like the design of this tool, especially the articulated arm. So many uses. Stop complaining about the lack of power supply,I am actually glad they don't bundle the power supply and make you pay more. it will work with any power supply 12V-16V DC with a current rating of > 2A . You might have to craft a connector or use alligator clips. The middle short pin that you see on the connector is passive ( I believe) its sole purpose is to make people insert the plug with correct polarity. If you're not confident working with electricity do not attempt using another power supply and buy the bundled one ! Interestingly based on my measurements the bundled power supply applies up to 24V in idle state (measured at the plug), then the voltage goes down to ~14.4V @ 1.5A on highest setting when the tool is on. Test was performed with a short segment of wire (~3"). It will probably draw more current with a longer segment of wire.

Doesn't cut foam as advertised
I have bought several foam cutters for a project and I am so disappointed buy this over priced product that doesn't do a really good job of cutting because the wire doesn't get as hot as it is advertised. Honestly the cheaper products do a better job. I have bought other products from this company and usually its high quantity but not the foam cutter. major disappointment.
