Not the best designed neti pot
The media could not be loaded. This is a review of the Neilmed Nasaflo Neti Pot. I purchased mine from Walgreens.Neti Pots have been around for ages and it's an easy, uncomplicated method to achieve nasal irrigation (sinus rinse.)This particular neti pot holds 8 ounces of solution. It has faintly visible lines indicating the 4 ounce and 8 ounce level. Generally you'd want to use about 4 ounces per nostril. This neti pot does not get high marks from me for several reasons:- The pot is opaque so it is nearly impossible to see the water level while using it. You have to guess how much solution to use when you do the first nostril then unscrew the cap to look inside to judge if you used to much or not quite enough. It's really awkward.- The screw on top is just plain inconvenient to use. Other neti pots that I've owned don't need a top and therefore are easier to use. Plus this top is just difficult to screw on.- The nose tip has lots of curves and angles which make cleaning it difficult. The only way to really clean it thoroughly is to boil it and/or flush it with a weak chlorine/water mixture. It's so important not to risk a bacterial infection when doing sinus irrigation. That's why you always want to use sterile water, not tap water. You can boil tap water and let it cool, or you can use store bought distilled or sterile water. But never never never just use plain unsterilized tap water. You also don't want to use plain water... always use a commercially prepared, pre-measured saline package or make your own and save a lot of money by using a recipe. There are many recipes out there but a starting point would be 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or non-iodized table salt) and 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda per 8 ounces of water. There are variations of this recipe so do your own research. This creates a saline solution that is close to your own body chemistry and won't burn as it goes through your sinuses. Plain water will give you a strong burning sensation that is not pleasant.I also use something called Alkalol and it is great stuff. You can add the Alkalol to your saline solution.Right after I purchased this neti pot, I learned that NeilMed just came out with one that you can see through. So that gets rid of one of my objections, but I still don't like this design and much prefer the older, more standard shaped neti pot.
