Self Defense
As another reviewer mentioned, this tomahawk is great for it's intended purpose, which is for self defense. Everything about it's design is evidence of this - the thin head, the cut out behind the blade, it's length. All of these things keep the weight centered closer to the handle which makes it agile - not a quality that matters when ones intention is chopping wood, but one that matters immensely in close quarters combat. Handle heavy also prevents the blade from becoming lodged too deeply in softer material, which could be very inconvenient in certain circumstances... It will chop wood once you sharpen it, but not well. For that I recommend Estwing's sportsman's axe, which is the opposite of the tomahawk in design, very blade heavy and makes short work of chopping and splitting, and holds it's edge beautifully while doing so.As for durability, I'm grateful to say I haven't had to use it to find out. But I use an Estwing hammer (which utilizes identical construction) every day for work, and the sportsman's hatchet frequently and both are holding up wonderfully. Highly recommend all their products. Also, if you get the leather handle and the pommel gets loose, just smash the peens down with a hammer and fill up any remaining space with red thread lock and it'll never come loose again.

Built well. USA MADE!
This is a very impressive tool built in America. You can feel that it’s made to last. The steel is forged from one piece and the leather handle is well-made along with the butt end that is stainless steel. Really nice.

Nice Tomahawk!
This tomahawk is a deal at Amazon's price. It is full tang and has a quality handle. The blade is on the small side but adequate for throwing, self defense, chopping down saplings and making tinder. It isn't overly heavy and has excellent balance. The blade came sharpened and a few swipes with the proper file made it even sharper! Like scary sharp. It is a serious tool. And it would work very well as a battle tomahawk. Plus............made in the USA!! The company, Estwing, has a stellar reputation and is known for somehow producing quality products in America at reasonable prices. Some reviewers pan the sheath but I found it to be well made and strong.I avoid Chinese made junk (if possible) so this purchase was doubly good. Fair price/quality/American-made. Way to go Estwing!! Thank you for keeping Americans employed and for making a quality product.

amazing, nearly indestructible, tool and weapon, lame sheath
This is an awesome axe. It's everything you could expect from Estwing. Be aware that the ends of the edge are rounded off into the axe just like their wood axes instead of ground to a point as shown in the picture. Expect to spend some quality time with a file and this axe to get the edge set back enough to bring the ends to a sharp sticking point. Also, the sheath seems to come from the Elmer Fudd school of design. Three separate snaps must be noisily undone to free the axe from the sheath's floppy grasp. One piece of one inch nylon webbing is sewn into the seam of the sheath's cotton edging top and bottom to provide a sort of belt loop. There are 4 oddly placed grommets on each side of the sheath where the whole thing was nylon zip tied onto a piece of cardboard for hanging display in store. I suppose you could lash this pathetic sheath to your kit with them using parachute cord. Don't be put off by these shortcomings, however. This is still possibly the best tomahawk I've ever owned and also the toughest. This is a nearly indestructible tool and an agile, well balanced weapon. It's the size of a framing hammer but the head is as light as a finish hammer. The whole axe, not the head, weighs 27 ounces. My wife, who is not usually into this kind of thing, wielded it effortlessly and played with it for about half and hour.

THIS IS A REAL WEAPON
(this is my wife's account, I am a man) This is a real weapon, I have chopped my hardest into an old dead pine tree that is very hard now and it cut into it well, with zero issues. Unlike the crap made in china THIS IS A REAL TOOL AND IS MADE WITH ESTWING'S GREAT METAL, IT IS ALL ONE PIECE AND THE VIRBRATION REDUCTION IN THE HANDLE IS NICE. BUY ONE

For wall mount, not throwing. Not a fan
Incredible quality, durable metal and grip. Looks better in person than online photos.Head is too lightweight for throwing. Awkward weight distribution for throwing. Blade edge is smaller than it ought to be (how long blade edge is).I would not recommend if this is sought to be used as throwing axe.Previous throwing axe /tomahawk was from estwing. Prefer my previous 100%

Eh, nice balance, poor finish
I like the way it looks, feels and performs but the black paint flakes off of these things so easily. I own 2 of these and it happened to both and I used them as gentle and careful as you could I suppose.
