Emerson 47D01U-843 Universal Heat Pump Defrost Control

A few months ago I noticed that my 10+ year-old Goodman heat pump was icing over. (see pic)It still ran alright, but it wouldn't go into defrost mode.A mechanic told me that it needed a new defrost control board. It did look burned up a bit. (pic)I like doing things myself if I can, so I went ahead and bought the exact Goodman replacement on amazon (Goodman PCBDM101S Defrost Timer) and installed it myself. (pic)New board, same problem. Heat pump ran fine, but no defrost.An HVAC friend of mine told me that sometimes the new boards are defective, so I bought another one.You guessed it; same problem.Finally my friend told me he doesn't trust the Goodman boards, but he really likes this Emerson board (Emerson 47D01U-843 Universal Heat Pump Defrost Control) and he uses it all the time.I bought it, and my friend installed it. (pic)Defrost works now.Pros: It works.- It's configurable to many different Heat pump brands.- You can actually program a lot of settings on the control board itself.- It will give you a code on the little dial if there's a problem (key to codes are in the included manual).- My HVAC friend said it's his favorite and he's never had one go bad.Con:- A bit trickier to install.I was able to switch out the wires on the identical Goodman boards easy enough, but this one has a littlemore going on. It has good directions, but in the end I did need a pro to install it. But, it works now, and that's a lot better than getting a new heat pump. :)

Fixed the AC at my mothers house after a lightning strike killed both boards and a thermostat. We replaced the thermostat and the air handler board but didn't realize the outdoor unit was bad as well. Found an OEM replacement but decided to see what was out there and found this little gem. It solved the problem and improved the 20 year old system by adding defrost by demand. Should help on the power bill. No big amount but every dollar helps. Had to watch the videos and read the manual a few times to understand exactly how to connect it. But once I figured it out it worked like a charm.And like the title says it was cheaper than OEM, like half the cost.

After going through 2 OEM defrost boards and having absolutely ZERO luck with them, I decided to go with this Defrost Control Board, especially after reading the other reviews that were left on Amazon. Well, let me tell you..... this did the trick! I programmed it to defrost on demand (instead of time/temperature) and it functions perfectly..... so much so, I bought a second one for my second unit. I highly recommend this board for ANYONE having defrost issues with their AC condenser.

Perfect if your defrost board needs replacing or if you want to have on-demand defrost on your existing "timed defrost only" heatpump.Easy to install, easy to configure, works well, instructions easy to understand. A few less positive points: my heatpump doesn't give access to the high-pressure switch so I disabled this function on the board and left the two wires unconnected. The board still threw an error and refused to start the compressor. I installed a jumper between the two HPS wires and it now works fine. Also, I tried contacting the manufacturer by email at 3 occasions and got no response whatsoever. I didn't try contacting them by phone though.All in all, it's still the only show in town if you're looking for something else than just a straight replacement.**Update almost 3 years later: I managed to splice out the high pressure wires and connect them directly to this board to allow for this functionality. It's still going strong in the summer or winter, dry or humid weather. No complaints whatsoever.

Installed in 2019 on a 5-Ton Carrier HP. I found this board easy to install, especially if you read the instructions and label the wires. Initial setup was straightforward, as I decided on the various parameters in advance. After the first winter, I changed the minimum compressor cut-out to 0 degrees, as my heat pump will still make heat at that temp. Only complaint is the display is not so bright, and requires shade to read all the messages. Also very sensitive to resistance on the Hi-pressure cut-out. Had a problem with board locking out on hi-pressure until I found the loose connection. Make sure all connections are tight!

My defrost control board was bad from the factory. My HVAC technician wanted $500 just to replace the OE board under warranty. There were some things I didnt like about the old one like defrosting when it wasn't even needed. After researching, I found this board was a direct replacement and gave the demand defrost option. It is a bit much to process for people that aren't electrically inclined, but I am used to reading wiring diagrams and had it mostly perfect the first time. I had to disable the high pressure switch option in the board as my HVAC system didn't have one. After that it worked great!

Only lasted 8 months. I have call for cool and Mr. happy is smiling,but fan/compressor not coming on. back to the O.E.M. board.
