I couldn't get a fluorescent ring bulb to fit my old Maplin magnifier lamp so decided to convert it to bright modern LEDs powered from a 12 volt smps from an old hard disk. These worked well as four LEDs in series with a 10 ohm resistor can be run from 12 volts. I got the brightness I wanted from even ring of thee tiny lights from 8 sets of four. Also uses about a third of the power used by the fluorescent tube.

At nominal Li-ion battery voltage, these start producing light at <100mA. I can't get them to their rated wattage before they become retina-burningly bright! I'm building a simple desk lamp, and although 1 of these is enough, I'm using 4 to dissipate the power and prevent having to run them too hard. Highly recommended.

Good brightness and a good daylight colour. The contacts seem very robust and if you look carefully are marked for polarity. I would definitely buy again when required.
