Such a great movie
I love Helen Mirren, and I loved this movie! It's not only got an outstanding performance by Helen Mirren, but it also has a particularly outstanding performance by the young actress who plays Mirren's character at a younger age. I've seen loads of films set in this time period, but for some reason THIS one really conveyed the urgency of the times, the anxiety of trying to get to a safer location when everyone around is going nuts. Why is this so good? It just is. It still resonates with me, partly because of the way it showed the before-and-after of the Nazi buildup in the country, but also because it showcased such a beautiful work of art and used it to spotlight the horrible turbulence of the times. That painting is fantastic, and just seeing it as it must've looked in a family's house before the war was a revelation. And seeing the injustice of having a country refuse to return it to the family from which it had been stolen - infuriating! But to see that injustice confronted and to see that good CAN prevail, that made this intense movie feel worthwhile in the end. I've watched it several times and recommend it to anyone wanting an engrossing movie that doesn't make you feel horrible afterwards. It's uplifting! It's not the kind of movie you can just kinda watch in the background and do homework - you are going to be pulled in! And honestly, these performances are worth watching, just for themselves. Excellent!

Passionate Acting
This movie gets real personal for Ryan Reynolds and Helen Miriam. What a gripping story of facing the past to rightly restore what was taken from you!

A truly wonderful story
This film is a true story and very inspiring. The actors are superb in the film, and the story is so timely. The film is clean and very touching. I'm so glad I bought this movie. I highly recommend to anyone who loves good stories.

I don't care what the critics say--it was wonderful; Helen Mirren was excellent; Ryan Reynolds was VERY good.
Sometimes critics, who cannot get over a notion that ALL movies have to satisfy their inflated notions of the art (and purposes--YES, MANY purposes) of cinema, do great harm. After I read some critics panning Woman in Gold when it first came out, I decided not to see it. $8.00 per ticket (in Hawaii)--two tickets, for my wife and me--$16.00, plus the (for me) impossible-to-resist hot dog and popcorn at the the theater--$25.00. Sheesh, I could buy a couple of books, maybe even Audible.com books for that. And instead of a couple of hours in a theater, have 14 hours of "reading" pleasure and more if I reread or relisten. So I didn't go.But for $5.00 on Amazon Prime and both of us sitting in our lounge chairs, eating dinner. Why not?And it was WONDERFUL. Of course, Helen Mirren was wonderful. But I have long admired Ryan Reynolds. And I should have known better than to listen to the critics. He is subdued, nerday, sincere, with an undertone of bitter sharpness--far from the wise-cracking roommate in his old TV series, far from the tortured heroes he has played in other movies. He has got to be one of the most underestimated actors around. And, yes, the story is corny and historically inaccurate. But IT'S A MOVIE. IT'S A MOVIE. IT'S A MOVIE. And it was moving, and HURRAY for the good guys beating unbeatable odds. And yes, it made me realize how complacent we are about injustices, and we SHOULD fight against apathy and injustice. It manipulated my feelings. IT'S A MOVIE.Why don't some critics get it? Some--very few--movies are--but most movies are not--all consuming, full-of-wisdom, marvels of dramatic/comedic art. But that doesn't mean they are bad movies. They are VERY good, and they have good effects. They're not great. So what? Give them credit for what they do.Woman in Gold made me want to look up the history of Klimt and related artwork and read about what happened with art thefts during World War II.THEN I go to history books and biographies and news articles and commentaries. And I wish I had gone to see Woman in Gold when it was on a big screen in a theater.

The Golden Rule
Helen Mirren, an actress in her prime, playing a charming but determined woman, Maria Altmann, out to retrieve a painting of her aunt by the famous artist, Klimpt. First the Nazis stole it as well as the necklace worn by the aunt for the picture. Then it was given to the Belvedere Museum in Austria. It has become a national treasure and the Austrain authorities would not part with it in spite of its support for the art resitution programme.Ryan Reynolds, an actor entering his prime in 2015 (8 years after his breakout year 2007), plays Randy Schoenberg, a descendant of famous Austrians, but like Maria, has a much quieter life in America where they fled from the Nazis. Randy is a budding lawyer, and who was engaged by Maria only for the reason that his mother is a close friend of Maria - 'I needed someone I could trust'.Randy is inexperienced but resourceful. He also has a trustworthy mien and a pleasant, sincere demeanour. All that comes to his aid in the final showdown in the Austrian arbitration court where he was pitted against the best lawyers the state could find. His closing speech is reason alone for watching this movie; but it is the performance of the cast, especially Mirren, Randy and Allan Corduner, that makes the movie all the more mesmerising. It is based on a true, and moving, story.
