Ergonomic!
This very affordable and very ergonomic tool enabled me to to efficiently remove several hundred square feet of sod at my residence in the hill country in central Texas. This well-designed and well fabricated $50 hand tool gave me such good results that I was able to sell the Bermudagrass sod! I’m so glad that I didn’t rent a gasoline-powered sod cutting machine.

Great price!
I was so happy to find a sod lifter for this price. It is sturdy and seems to work great! The only negative I might have, and maybe all sod lifters have this, is that the top, where you put your foot to push it in the ground is not straight, as you can see, it has a dip on either side. This would work much better if it was straight. It's working well regardless. We use it for cutting a wide circle around trees and removing grass. Great Tool! All gardeners should have one! Also, you can make beautiful new lines for edging your garden easily!

great for clearing grass
This is a good tool for small amounts of sod removal. if you are doing a large section rent a powered sod cutter. I would have given this 5 stars however the head of tool was not welded on squarely. Probably does not effect performance, but I am picky about quality. otherwise this tool is well built and should last.

I was actually surprised that I liked this tool so much
I was actually surprised that I liked this tool so much. It is a little awkward to use at first but once you get your technique down it really works. Other reviewers seem to treat this like a shovel, which I don't really think it should be classified as one. It seems best when used for light vertical edging and cutting roots on a horizontal plane. For what it's worth, I prefer to use this from a kneeling position to take quick jabs under small sections of sod. I found this way was less stressful for my back then trying to use it completely standing (more like hunched over) or trying to take up large pieces of sod like a real sodcutter. Once I got used to it, I was able to clear away a couple wheelbarrows full of sod and weeds from the driplines of 7 trees in my orchard in around 20 minutes. I'd definitely recommend it to others for such purposes.

A HEAVY tool
I purchased this to remove sod from small patches in my yard. It is very heavy and dull. When I put an edge on it, I'll be able to say more. Right now I'm not sure if it's usable. Unless you want to do some grinding/filing this is not for you.

Makes removing grass easier
I like gardening tools that do the job they were designed to do. Bully Tools Sod Lifter is definitely one of those gardening tools that helps me tackle the job of removing sod or grass to make way for new gardens. This well balanced, heavy duty, solidly constructed sod lifter turned what could have been days of digging and shaking soil from sod clumps to create new garden beds (which is what I previously did due to the heavy clay soil in my yard) into a three hour job that was much easier on my body. I would recommend this sod lifter to anyone who needs to remove sod/grass.

This tool makes it easier.
NOTE: This is a sod lifting and removal tool. It does not cut the sod. You will need a different tool to cut the sod before using this tool. The Bully Tool is well made and it will likely last my lifetime. Using hand tools to DYI cut and move Texas clay soil sod is not an easy job. This tool makes it easier. The trick is to first cut strips of sod the width of the Bully Tool blade, Then, cut the strip of sod into squares. Insert the Bully Tool blade vertically into the cut row and center the blade with the sod square. Angle the front side of the sod up to release and cut the grass roots. Once the front is lifted, angle and push the blade further underneath the sod. If necessary, wiggle the blade to cut additional roots. The sod will separate from the ground. Repeat with the rest of the squares. I found it best to stand and cut from the uncut sod side.Importantly, to make this work you need to cut the squares with an edger tool. I used a Garden Weasel Edger Chopper. It makes clean cuts the depth of the Bully Tool blade. Once the squares are cut, the Bully Tool lifts and separates the grass into very manageable plugs to plant elsewhere.
