Lonely Planet Cape Town & the Garden Route (Travel Guide)

I travel for work to Capetown 3 times a month. This book has been invaluable for me in exploring this beautiful, yet complex county.

Purchased for my daughter who is studying abroad in Cape Town. She read it before leaving and said it offered excellent info & tips. She’s in SA now and tells me that she carries the book with her every day & refers to it frequently.

Used this to plan my trip next week.

For the relatively small geographic region this book covers (Cape Town, suburbs, vineyards in Western Cape, and a sliver of the Garden Route) this book is absolutely exhaustive. There is a nearly perfect balance between cultural attractions and outdoor adventure, and there is special attention given to the Wine Region and the history of Apartheid that are such important cultural elements of the country. That means this book has something for everyone.Another nice touch is that it really IS right up to date. The listings are diverse and accurate, for all tastes. Maps are another high point. There are many and they're accurate.Unfortunately, the guide does not emphasize the high level of crime in the city. While you're not likely to be bothered by this if you keep your wits about you, a careless attitude could find you in trouble very quickly. The vineyards are the safest areas in general, and violent crimes are very rare in places like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, but it's best to keep to the confines of your lodging during the dark hours in Cape Town.Keep in mind that this book is essentially a Cape Town city guide, so don't expect coverage of national parks or wildlife reserves. You'll need the guide to the entire country for that.

Because kindle version made me rate the book before I could continue reading....I should not have to write a review to read what I bought

Book from 2018, its incredibly outdated. Restaurants are closed for example which are advised.
